Iphone repair

A friend of mine dropped her Iphone on the street and the glass/plastic covering over the touchscreen cracked. The on/off button also broke (not sure how exactly, but it doesnt work). She said it still could receive calls but then the battery ran out and it hasnt worked since. I dont have an Iphone and havent seen hers, so at least as of now I cant give any more info than that.  She was told by Apple that it would cost 250$ to fix. I know there are certain problems with Ipods that have cheaper and not-to-difficult DIY fixes (such as replacing a dead battery). Does anyone know if Iphone problems such as those here can be similarly fixed?

Thanks,

Re: Iphone repair

iFixIt has these take-apart guides for the iPhone.

On the other hand, it sounds like you need to replace the entire display assembly for her iPhone. iFixIt does offer (although it is out of stock as I type this) the display assembly for US$200. Considering that a new replacement is $400, this is getting into the range of commodity pricing where it is not worth repairing rather than replacing it. You might check the online Apple Store for a refurbished iPhone (although there aren't any there at the time that I type this).

iFixIt also has a sell your Mac program. I'm not sure if it applies to iPhones as well, but you might ask and see if you can get something back for the usuable parts of that iPhone.

Re: Iphone repair

Thanks for the information. Maybe I can get more specific info from her.
