Winter: love it or hate it?

Me, the only time I like winter is in a rural setting. It's quiet and beautiful. But in a big city, with deadlines and schedules and a need to go here and there, it's a frigging drag. Drivers who, despite having grown up in Canada, don't know how to drive in the snow; pedestrians bumping into each other with their puffy-ass parkas; cold, nasty winds; wet feet; dark days with early sunsets.

That is to say, I hate winter. And I know I'm not alone in that.

Re: Winter: love it or hate it?

I definitely start getting cranky in January which is generally pretty rainy and miserable around here. I need one of those sun-stimulating lights I think. My dog on the other hand decidedly loves winter (unless it is raining) and has had the crazies every time we get a short cold spell (because that's the only kind we get).

Re: Winter: love it or hate it?

I love it.  Getting around can be a pain, but I like the cold, I like the snow.  I like to snow shoe, so getting a lot of snow is aces in my book.

I could do without wind chill, however.  Twenty below is fine if it doesn't have a smurfing 30 mph wind attached to it.

I think it's just great to be able to outside without passing out from heat exhaustion.

I like nice, snowy weekends. However, the Monday commute, even if everything is more-or-less cleaned up, is a total bitch. Snow during M-F can go eat a dick, it has a way of ruining everything.

What I do get of winter I love. There is just no feeling like the first cold front that blows in for the season.

I love winter when there is snow. When there isn't snow I hate it.

I love it.  I want rain and snow all year round!  (Which incidentally may be why I hate my time in Southern California.)

Re: Winter: love it or hate it?

I use to hate winter.  I don't drive so it meant walking to and from the bus through drifts and on ice.  Now I work from home, and I can enjoy cuddling under the blankets an hour longer and enjoying hot cocoa while watching it snow.  I know I don't have to be out in it big_smile

We are talking about moving to Alaska, however. Not sure I'm ready for the extremely short days, and longer winters.  I've got a few years to prepare though.

I HATE WINTER.

It's useless and I hate it.

My dad spent all summer up there working on one of his projects, and is still making rather frequent trips there and to the arctic circle, even this late in the season (his fields will eventually freeze over and be inaccessible or something like that). We went and visited him this summer. Southern Alaska was quite something, I love the temperate rainforest climate.

I don't think I could handle such short days and such extreme cold, but my dad said he loved it, even though he is a perpetually cold person like me. He loved walking around downtown Anchorage as the sun was rising around 10 a.m. and sitting in his office with the window that overlooks downtown and watching the sun kind of circle around the horizon (it doesn't get very high). He said it was really eerie some days and kinda magical. He walked all over the place, and other than falling on his butt if he slipped on some ice, he thought it was fantastic. However, it might be like my brother and the snow in Golden, CO when he went to school there - fun the first year, crappy after that, and nice to think about when you don't live there.

It iced over pretty heavily here last January for a few days and I thought it was pretty cool. The start of classes was delayed, I had about 1/2" of ice stuck to my car. I spent three days inside playing video games, drinking hot chocolate and living off my stores of popcorn and pasta. It was fun, but I wouldn't want it all the time.

I love winter, but right now it's like minus 8 and ridiculous. I like it cold, but not that cold. Mostly because downhill skiing in freezing cold weather really sucks.

in Celsius, it's just below freezing, and i believe 0ºC is equal to about 40ºF, therefore  0ºF is appx -40ºC, which is just almost bearable.

0˚ Celsius would be 32˚F... the point at which water freezes on both scales...

Only this part of Texas. Ever been to the panhandle this time of year?
