Applying for Internships

Well, I figured its time to start building a portfolio.  I'm applying to two local jobs for web development with PHP.  Anything anyone can think of that I should keep in mind when applying?

Dress formal if need be! Also, prepare your intership letter accordingly. That's what i would do..

Re: Applying for Internships

Don't be surprised if many people don't even reply... Both my internships I got because of people I know. I applied to various places listed on campus with nary a reply. Of course, the last one I applied to in that manner was a couple of years ago when I was a freshman, so it's not like I had a very beefy resume yet, but still, most of them listed that they wanted a freshman or sophomore. My current internship, which will also likely become my first full time job, came from one of my professors that was a guest professor that has a startup game company. He liked my work in my work in his class, since I went above and beyond expectations on the final project, and the next summer he offered me a job.

Re: Applying for Internships

Start with a personalized cover letter and resume, make sure to follow up with a call after you submit your application (don't wait for them to call you, it will probably never happen) and make sure to send a thank you note after your interview.  Good luck!

Re: Applying for Internships

So...I got a response from one company.  Puget Sound Educational School District.  I have an informal interview on Thursday @ 1!  What does one wear to an "informal" interview?  I don't want to under/over dress...

At the least, no blue jeans.   You don't need a suit jacket per se.  I wear a good black leather jacket, black or beige slacks, a good sweater or a new white dress shirt with tie.

At the last informal interview I went to, I was pretty surprised at how sloppy over half the people looked.

It doesn't matter how the other people look, it matters how you look. When I went to my interview for veterinary school last year (around this time actually), I was dressed business casual - nice slacks with a blazer and dress shoes - and I looked better than the panel that interviewed me. However, if I had been any less dressed up, I never would have been admitted.

I suggest wearing slacks and a blazer at least, I read the leather jacket idea and personally I don't find them to be very professional, but I suppose it is up to the individual. Make sure you wear closed-toed dress shoes (I assume though you are a gentleman and not a lady so that's probably not an issue like it was for me). You probably don't have to wear a tie and you could wear a nice solid-colored shirt under your jacket.

Make sure above all you have prepared what you are going to say - notice where you interject extragrammatical things like "um" or "well" or "like". I didn't have a lot of time to practice for my interview, but what little I did really helped me seem more together and less of a mess (I was nervous beyond belief).

Good luck!!

Re: Applying for Internships

When I had my interviews for internships last summer I wore jeans and a nice button-up.  My sleeves were rolled up to my elbows and my tattoos were showing.  Each person I interviewed with called me for a second interview.  If the interviews would have been for a more long-term job I'd still probably wear the jeans and button-up, but I'd throw a nice blazer over top.

I find that personality and talent (and ability to show that talent) far outweigh how nice you dress.  But you still need to dress more nicely than you normally do, unless you're James Bond.

Now with your situation, interviewing with a school district and all, I'd go for the slacks and a nice shirt, maybe a polo, no jeans.

Re: Applying for Internships

Yeah, I would wear clean and pressed slacks, nice shirt like a polo, and no tennis shoes.  Make sure to get a haircut if you need one.  Good luck!

Re: Applying for Internships

So I went and got a pair of nice slacks tailored, and got measured for a nice new dress shirt.  Got my tie and belt and shoes already.

Re: Applying for Internships

Regarding my last group interview, I was wondering if nearly all of those other people were rejected because of their selected outfit.    I was one of the better dressed.

Re: Applying for Internships

So, I don't have the job yet, but they were really impressed with me and the director said they had to talk about it but that I pretty much am getting the job.

Congrats!  Internships, if they are a good one, are fantastically beneficial.  I'm really looking forward to my third one next semester.

Re: Applying for Internships

Yay!  Internships and relevant work experience in general are the best things you can have.  I am astonished by the number of young graduates who haven't bother to get any, and then can't figure out why they have difficult times landing "real" jobs.

Hope you enjoy the work!

Re: Applying for Internships

Just the usual, and what others have said: put lots of work into a good resume, give appropriate though to appearance, know the company, the position, expectations, etc., show up early, send thank yous, etc., etc.

If you're unsure of the appropriate level of attire, don't be afraid to call and ask.
