Odd Question.....Run OS 7 on Newer Machine?

So, I'm sitting in my dorm and am bored.  Is it possible to run System 7 on a newer PPC machine?  Don't ask me why, I just want to do it...lol.  I'm assuming System 6 is a definite no.  7/8...maybe?

Anyway, here's my issue.  I've got a G4 running Leopard.  No more classic.....what can I do?  I downloaded the image files for System 7 from Apple, but I can't do anything  with them, no matter what I try doing.  I tried restoring each diskette image to a partition on my spare HD, but Disk Utility wanted nothing to do with them.

well 8.1 and above will certainly run on a PPC. I don't know what would happen with 7 though.

Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

Re: Odd Question.....Run OS 7 on Newer Machine?

It depends on the model G4 you are using. Most Macs have hardware which prevents them from running OSes which are too old.

The easiest way of doing this is to find an older Mac which can run System 7 natively (like the pre-G3 PowerBooks) and get it running there, then copy the System Folder from this to the other non-Intel Mac. According to MacTracker, the oldest OS that your G4 could possibly use is OS 8.6 and the last G4 came with OS 9.2.2, so you may be out of luck trying to get System 7 working on yours.

System 7 won't even run on any of the G3 systems, let alone a G4.  Even the last 604 based macs (8600, 9600, 7300, etc) used Mac OS 7.6.1 or 8.

I think Mini vMac will work, it worked when I tried it on my CD iMac.

I've got a Gigabit Ethernet.  I wasn't sure.  Thanks for the info.  I didn't know if there was some backwoods way of getting it to run or not.

As far as an emulator.....suggestions?
