Re: We should ban legal marriage
With the more info I find on Christianity, I'm not really sure wha I think about it any more, as over the years it's been dramatically changed, like in the 18 century (I think), the bible was greatly edited to say that he males must always be dominating (those people obviously never been to the Amazon), and at the same time the church was spreading propaganda about women, calling them witches and the likes, and that they need to be kept under check (causing the Salem witch hunts [if there really were witches, don't you think that they could avoid being caught and drowned, burned, etc?]), causing most of the sexism that are quite watered-down now, but that has changed mostly in the last 100 years or so.

Re: We should ban legal marriage
Yeah, the bible is pretty sexist. Actually, all the Abrahamic religious are pretty misogynist. Islam is particularly bad.
In any case, I have no strong desire to get married. However, I would like equality under the law. I want to be treated equally under the tax code, etc. Personally I think marriage is an archaic institution. So for me, it's not a desire to get married as much as a desire to be treated equally under the law.
I'd rather see the legal institution of marriage abolished and replaced with civil unions for everyone. If a couple wants a religious marriage ceremony, go to church.

shouldn't the tax code be edited so it takes into account people that have to take care of kids as opposed to people that are simply married?

It's a simple issue of societal equality. Whether or not I want to actually get married and/or ever serve in the military is irrelevant.

It does. Dependents are a deduction. Also, there are actually some drawbacks to filing jointly, as friends who are registered DPs in the state of CA (which is now requiring joint filing) are finding out.

Re: We should ban legal marriage
as has been stated, legal marriage does not require religious and/or statements of subservience.
you do not have to be married in a church to have the marriage recognized as legal.
i doubt any political pressure can force a church to recognize your marriage if such proceedings are in opposition to the church's rules, but if that is your goal, then you've probably chosen the wrong church/religion/sect.
on the other hand, if an institution such as a religiously affiliated hospital expects they may have occasion to admit emergency patients from all walks of life, they must defer to legal status, and not religious status, as a jew with heart failure would be at a dietary disadvantage in a catholic hospital, as would a gay couple expecting visitation rights...
...and watch out for the flying meat!

Huh?
In the 18th century, the Bible commonly used (in English speaking countries) was the King James Version, translated in 1611, and was a very good translation for its time. It does have some translation errors - we've learned more about Greek since then and have better reconstructions of the old texts - but it still was AND IS a very good translation (if ye mindeth not olde english).
I think you will find that these claims about editing the Bible are almost always false. Some religious groups have, but not Christianity in general. Greek texts from very early on are available to confirm this, and Hebrew texts from before Jesus was born also exist for the Old Testament.

No it doesn't you're are free to go into a church and get married or elope or whatever.

The problem is that it gives benefits to the married couple that unmarried couples (gay or otherwise) do not get.
If you are a couple and you decide not to get married as a matter of principle (i.e. rejection of the system and this archaic institution) why do you have to miss out on the benefits. Through marital benefits the state is encouraging marriage, an institution that many might not support.

It's not like the bible loses any truth-value by edition. It's a big lie to start with.

Ah. I left the legal out of this one. I get it now. I don't think that banning legal marriage is the solution though.
