Re: Beer.

Guinness Draft. The canned version does just fine, as long as it's not served too cold.
Still, it's hard to beat it when served in an actual Irish pub. We have a good supply of such places around Boston. tongue

Sam Adams Cream Stout is a personal favorite. Good stuff. Tremont Ale: A treat, but pricey.

And there's nothing wrong with that!  Pabst is actually a very nice American Lager, and it hits the spot on a warm summer afternoon. Goes great with a Genoa Salami sandwich.  At this price, who would complain?

Are you kidding? Those lightweight Marines would be passed out before I'd had enough to get a hangover. wink

Actually, I had killed a bottle of wine with my wife and chased it with a glass of rye. As I was finishing the glass, the apartment complex's fire alarms went off. I was in the courtyard waiting for them to turn the alarms off, and a few other residents were there with a bottle of vodka, a jug of Hawaiian punch, and with me already holding a glass...
Then some other residents decided to help everyone kill time and brought out their beer pong table.

Re: Beer.

I've yet to have a Sam Adams I've liked, nor a Budweiser product. Miller High Life & Yuengling Light Lager are palatable and Miller Light is Ok. Pete's Wicked Ale was almost enjoyable. Beyond that I couldn't tell you.

Try a Pilsner Urquel. This is the first Pilsner to be produced. A little pricey- it's worth it.

It is indeed quality.

As is just about anything from a local brewery here in NoVA - Dominion. Their Oak Barrel Stout is unparalleled.

There's a place near me called Dog Fish something or another. I've had a few of their beers and would do it again. There's also a place north of here that brew their own beer on premesis, most are very good. All too many calories though- plus they do french fries with sweet potatoes and have an awesome dip that goes with it. Aaaagh! I LOVE BAD THINGS. . . and they love me. And that's all that matters.

I've always thought Sam Adams was a "safe" not-too-bad beer to order out when you went to a new place with a limited selection of booze.

My experience has been Sam Adams can be hit-or-miss. Sometimes you get a good batch, sometimes a case or a keg is a bit on the skunky side. Overall it's a good beer, but I certainly have had some less-than-optimal glasses of their brews.

Re: Beer.

The only Sam Adams I can drink is the standard lager. I refuse to drink anything with fruit in it- cranberry lambic, pumpkin, lemon etc. . .

And you're right about the hit or miss, especially where I live. Only county in America where all the alcohol is distributed by the county. They aren't quite the beer snobs most of their customers are and as a result most of the beer goes bad.

Maybe thats why I stick with what I drink.

Dogfish Head

I have had a few of their bottled products and each was excellent. One of the better East Coast Brewers IMHO.

Following the end of Prohibition in the US, some states chose to maintain limits on alcohol sales with state-controlled stores being the only places where some or all alcoholic beverages can be sold. zoees lives in Montgomery County, Maryland, which has its own Department of Liquor Control which is the equivalent to the statewide control boards in some states.

Re: Beer.

It is and it sucks. The significance here: we were talking about good beer and I explained that the county I live in has no appreciation for things like "shelf life". It also means stores and bar owners never get any good deals.

I actually grew up in Virginia where you could go out to the middle of absolute no-man's-land, walk into a tiny little mom and pop store and they would at the very least have cigarettes, diapers, milk and beer.

When I first moved to Maryland I wandered around a 7-11 for twenty minutes looking for the hidden beer area- not happening. There are stores that sell beer and wine, just beer, and liquor and wine. Of course I probably make it sound worse than it is because I literally learned my way around here by the place that sell beer.
They are everywhere.

I grew up in Missouri, where you could go to any grocery store, 7-11, or gas station and get anything from a case of beer to a bottle of Everclear. Then when I first moved to Virginia, I wandered around a grocery store for twenty minutes looking for the hidden liquor area.

Re: Beer.

We were down in Kill Devil Hills on vacation I woke up with the detox shakes. We go out for early lunch and I ordered a Miller Lite and a shot of cold Citron, why not? I felt like smurf. If there was anything, well, you get the picture.

Couldn't do it, it was Sunday, and before noon, two and a half minutes to be exact. SO I waited. He gave me the beer and apologized for not bringing my shot. Again, one cannot have two alcoholic beverages in front of them at the same time. Yeah. I walked up to the bar and he had a double waiting. . .

That's a problem? Seriously, everyone I know who tastes Brooklyn's Local 1, a belgian style bottle fermented local brew that is only brewed at the brewery in Brooklyn, is addicted to it like crack. And since it's 9% also, every other beer that isn't now just seems lightweight in alcohol content, which is great because it means I can now drink more beer. And if any of you haven't tried Local 1, you should unless you're one of the beer haters here how shouldn't have even posted or you just don't like the belgians.

Hmm.

I'll have to try it again.
I picked up a bottle of it when it first arrived and was pretty dissapointed.
I usually love all the seasonal and specialty brews Garret Oliver has come up with. (he makes the best bavarian style Hefe Weisen and Imperial stout in the US -I've known of his brewing prowess since his days at Manhattan Brewery in the early '90s).
I think value wise, Ommegang's Rare Vos or any one of the Unibrouwe (sp?) put out much better Belgian style tripels.

Yes, Garret really wins with this one. The only time I've heard of a bad Local 1 was one of the test bottles with no labels on them from a year ago somehow didn't make it and was undrinkable, but we had more bottles to open, so no biggie. However, with Local 1 selling for $9 a bottle, I sure hope I don't get a bad one that I actually have to pay for.

It wasn't too long ago that you wouldn't have been served that shot at all, at anytime.
