Re: me = traumatized
Front wheel drives cars are much easier to drive competently in the snow but it's only rear wheel drive cars that let you drive as an expert.
Particularly your 944 ought to be great in the slick if you have good tires. Those things have very good weight distribution. All you need to do is get used to the different way rear wheelers handle and respond to power and braking.
Oh, yeah....Glad you didnt get dead!!

Hah, if there were snow outside, you can bet your ass that I would not be inside right now.

Re: me = traumatized
In high school I was going around a curve late at night in my dads car. Must have been going too fast because suddenly, I was going in circles and then the front end of the car was in a snowbank. Luckily all I did was pop out a grill, which somehow cost me $400-500 (which of course my dad made me pay). Scary how it happens so quickly, you can barely react.
I've always wanted to have a suitcase handcuffed to my wrist.

Re: me = traumatized
I used to fishtail it down my dirt road in my rwd datsun 510. the road was maybe a 1/4 of a mile long. I've made it over half way once or twice.
when snowboarding I would pull into the (empty) resort parking lot, pull up the ebrake and jam on the gas in my front wheel drive escort. it's amazing how far you can slide sideways.
and any time it would snow I would find an empty parking lot to spin donuts in.
I figure that if you don't do it on purpose then you won't know what to do when it happens on accident.

Re: me = traumatized
I spun out in the rain in a '79 Toyota Corolla in Richmond, VA going around Stuart Circle on Monument Avenue. Like the OP, I had this surreal moment of detachment as I watched my surroundings revolve around me like a merry-go-round, then I came to rest facing oncoming traffic, the rear bumper of my car mere inches from the cars parked along the curb.
So, yeah... reading the original post brought that experience back to me in a big way.

Re: me = traumatized
Last time I was driving in a bad snow I was in a Chevy Caviler, FWD. I accelerated as necessary to the top of the hill and then started down the other side. I started to go too fast. I was afraid to use the brakes too much, so I tried to downshift to 2nd (Automatic transmission). BAD IDEA! The front end decellarated, but the back end didn't! This was all happening in a curve BTW. As I watched the rear of the car begin overtaking the front, and trying to keep it all on the road, I got around the curve and could see at the bottom of the hill, a UPS truck, sideways, and stuck.
I can't be really sure how I drove out of that. I think I gave a little gas to get the car lined back out and managed to slow down enough to get around the stuck truck, but I think the only thing that kept me from bailing was the unrelenting grip my ass had on the seat!

Re: me = traumatized
A friend of mine had this tale to tell:
He was driving down the Autobahn at a moderate (for West Germany) speed when he hit a patch of black ice that was in the shade of trees in a curve. Spun around the car at least once before leaving the pavement, then rolled the car sideways four or five times in the grassy edge next to the Autobahn, finally landing rightside up. Somehow he didn't have a scratch on him despite the fact that he had two empty pony kegs of beer in the rear seat. He was sitting there a bit dazed in wonder over what had happened when a car driver came up to him to see how he was (there is a Good Samaritan law in Germany: you MUST stop to give assistance). The other driver breathed a sigh of relief because he really did fear what he might have seen, considering that he had watched the accident as it happened in a car behind my friend.
After the police came to take a report of the accident, my friend had to spend about a hour picking up his company's brochures that had spilled out.

Re: me = traumatized
Actually, besides VW beetles (the real ones), 924s and 944s are the best 2wd cars I've ever driven in the snow.
There seems to be a myth that the reason big old American cars are bad in snow is the fact that they are rear wheel drive. The real reason is that they have poor weight distribution and crappy suspension. My BMW 328 without traction control was better than either my jetta or civic under any condition. That includes very steep hills, snow, rain, dry etc...
Front wheel drive is a way for manufacturers to cut costs while making you think you are getting something better.
I hope my volvo 740 works as well. my parents 240s never did too well on regular tires

Not to mention there is definitely something to be said about being pushed around instead of being pulled. I strongly prefer rear wheel drive.

Re: me = traumatized
Indeed. I've just never managed to set and hold a FWD in a proper four wheel drift. Front wheels drifting and rear wheels FALADFAF isn't hard to pull off and is tolerable on pavement, gravel or wet dirt if but on snow/ice or dry-slick hardpan it doesn't work worth a fiddler's smurf.
Patience is a virtue of the weak for it makes them stand still long enough for the strong to crush them with ease.
