My bet is he says:

1. Apple should have done this before 10.5.2 and that they're a bunch of slackers.

2. Apple bowed to the pressure he put on them by complaining and that they would never have made this change without his efforts.

EVERYBODY hates stacks, and since this restores the old functionality, he -and everyone else- will obviously be satisfied.

Re: Stacks Haters Rejoice!

I don't HATE stacks. I just didn't think it was the dock solution Apple or it's users were hoping for. This is a lot closer.

It's more than "a lot closer" -- it's just a spring-loaded version of what we had before. ..which is exactly what users were hoping for.

Re: Stacks Haters Rejoice!

You seem to think everyone liked the old system. I for one did not. I was no fan of Stacks (though I did not particular dislike it either) but it at least saw a little usage. The old system did not. What I'm hoping for is the list to be fully hierarchal (which looks like the case) and to fully support drag and drop functionality across all levels of the list. Until I see it that is the case (which it may very well be), it's just "a lot  closer".

"Everyone" as in every single Mac user on the planet?  Clearly not - obviously there's some exceptions.  You're being waaayyy too literal.

A shame they couldn't do something useful like make them spring loaded.

Re: Stacks Haters Rejoice!

Perhaps I am being a bit to literal. Wouldn't be the first time

My feeling on the whole thing is the old menu system was inadequate. Many people knew it but very few people talked about it. Apple tried something experimental to improve that but missed the mark with Stacks. This new change to it appears to fix some of the weakness in Stacks but it's currently unclear if it corrects some of the issues that plagued both the old menu system and Stacks. If it does that, it's really what many of us want.

I think those of us who hated Stacks would be content with the old menu system and added spring-loadedness(?).

Re: Stacks Haters Rejoice!

Oh, and if Apple would add real Stacks(meaning a bunch of files/folders from different locations dropped into the dock and represented by one dock icon), that wold be a plus.

Re: Stacks Haters Rejoice!

I quite like stacks and find the hatred of it rather amusing.  But clearly, more viewing options and static folders is a great, if not necessary option.

I simply made a folder in Documents called "Shortcuts," and put a few aliases in there to the Apps and Utilities folders and couple of other things I did not want clogging up the dock, and made it a "stack."  I set the sort to 'date created' or something like that and the Apps alias stays up front.

Re: Stacks Haters Rejoice!

As someone who keeps their Documents folder in their dock since OS 10.0.1 I can finally actually use it again how I always had until I upgraded to 10.5.

Why they got rid of it in the initial Leopard release I'll never know.

Well they are, in the "usual" way.  Dragging a folder onto the current iteration of docked "folder" will indeed provoke a Finder window to spring open.  In tiger, you'd get nothing.

This is what the new dock should've been:

There needs to be a clear distinction between "docked folders" and "stacks"

     • A stack should be thought of as a pile of icons.  Select a bunch of icons in the Finder, drag them to the dock, and they're represented by a single icon.

     • A docked folder should retain the Tiger behavior, with the addition of "spring-loaded menus" (as opposed to Leopard's "spring-loaded Finder Window").  A spring loaded menu allows you to drag & drop "through" the menu hierarchy.  Finally, there should be sorting options for the menu.

When adding these features, it's important to respect the wishes of those who find the current behavior useful.  In particular, the grid and fan views should not be lost, and I propose they even be improved.  For example, placing the "open in Finder" command at the bottom of a fan, will be a big help.  Similarly, the ability to change icon sizes in grid view will be of use to many.  Finally, scrolling, navigation and spring-loadedness (things we take for granted in the menu view) should be available as well.

Well they are, in the "usual" way.  Dragging a folder onto the current iteration of docked "folder" will indeed provoke a Finder window to spring open.  In tiger, you'd get nothing.

This is what stacks should've been:

(1) There needs to be a clear distinction between "docked folders" and "stacks"

     (a) A stack should be thought of as a pile of icons.  Stacks are created by selecting a bunch of icons in the Finder and dragging the selection to the dock.  A stack should support the same four views I define below for docked folders (b1, b2, b3, b4).

     (b) A docked folder should remain just that - a folder.  Clicking on the folder should present the contents of the folder in one of four (user-defined) views:

(b1) Hierarchal menu - similar to Tiger, but customizable.  You should be able to sort the menu by name/date/etc.  You should also be able to drag items "through" the menu hierarchy (they can make this black for consistency).
(b2) Hierarchal icon - similar to the current Grid view, but hierarchal.  In addition, there should be a vertical scroll bar when the items don't all fit.  The user should be able to change the icon size as well.  Like the menu view, this view should support dragging/navigating through the hierarchy.
(b3) Hierarchal List - Just like list view in Finder (but black for consistency).  Again, a scroll bar should appear as needed, and this view should support dragging/navigating through the hierarchy.
(b4) Hierarchal Fan View - Fan view looks cool, so let's make it better by making it hierarchal.  As with the other views, this should support dragging/navigating through the hierarchy, user-defined icon size, and scrolling.  As a final touch, the "Show in Finder" button should always appear at the bottom.

All of these views should be spring loaded!!!  Getting a Finder window is certainly an improvement, but I'd rather get a stack view (as I've defined it).

Yeah, you do know that b1,2, & 3 , and 4 for that matter can be achieved by a radical user action called a double click, right?  This will open something called the "folder" in a "window" where you can have things like icons, scroll bars, etc.

Really, I just don't get all the fuss about stacks.
