What's the worst gift you got?
One of my coworkers gave me this godawful dust collector figurine. It's a pig sitting up and decorated with some sort of flowers. The colors were brown green and mustard yellow. It was a mass produced type thing that you might see at flea market stands. It's absolutely the ugliest thing i've ever seen. It looked like a blind monkey painted it.
It wasn't just ugly. It was poorly painted. It went straight to the garbage after i opened, i kid you not.
The funny thing is, this same person would never display anything in her house remotely resembling this hideous object. I'm also pretty sure everyone else got the same thing since she gave everyone the same thing last year.
This is the first time i've ever literally opened something and immediately tossed it in the garbage. It's also the first time i haven't felt a twinge if guilt not keeping a gift.

My father got my mother an electric ice scraper. He also got her a cd titled "Jazz Funeral" which contains New Orleans style Jazz tunes.
I will give him a little credit, he did get her a very nice necklace. But seriously. An ice scraper? ..

An electric ice scraper. It could come in pretty useful if she drives in snowy weather a lot.

I think I even got one of those electric ice scrapers once. Not that useful around here because it's rare for the ice to get seriously thick.
Nothing too strange this year. My sister gave me a chia Garfield last year or so. I've never opened the box.

My wife got a scented 'jelly' candle for Christmas (on her allergic list). It was in a clear glass vase and had plastic plants embedded in the jelly.

I hope it went in the garbage. The last i heard (several years ago) those were not only toxic but dangerous to have around because of the way they burn. I'm sure she did toss it because of allergies. Just checking.
I didn't know they even sold jelly candles anymore.

I had a close relative pass away yesterday morning.

Got a dust collector myself justine, only it was kind of cute with little flowers and such. It is nice enough to give to my friend who loves things like that. She has a whole collection, so I don't feel bad about regifting. Outside of that, got some really nice things.
I'm sorry to hear that Chickenhawk. It is tough when someone passes away, much less when they do it around the holidays. My pryers are with you.

Sometimes I really wonder about the clods you work with, Justine. Was this an obligatory gift? Or just something so she can say she she gave gifts to her coworkers and look good (in her own humble opinion)? People have a really skewed set of priorities sometimes. Personally, I think it's better not to give anything at all, than give people a cheap piece of crap.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss, Chickenhawk.

I'm not entirely sure about the motivations (different culture), but several make sure they give a gift to everyone. Sometimes it's a dollar store stuff. Sometimes it's clearance stuff. Usually it's stuff that ends up in the garbage.
And yeah, i agree, it's better to give nothing than to give crap.

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

The bible, on DVD. WORST.Gift. Ever. Well, it may be a close second to salt and pepper shakers i got when I was 11. What use does an 11 year old have with decorative SnP shakers?
Alright, now, who wants to be transistorized?

Re: What's the worst gift you got?
I got one of those puzzles with a ring and some rope stuck through metal hoops type dealies. You know teh one. Figure out how to get the ring off. Took me like 30 seconds to get it off and maybe 45 to get it back on right. My dad was pretty disappointed and that disappointed me.

Re: What's the worst gift you got?
I didn't get anything really bad. I got some cheap plastic kitchen slider-dicer gizmo that will fall apart the second or third time I use it but even that isn't so bad. At least it will be used to or beyond its design lifespan, not just get tossed in the trash un-opened.

Re: What's the worst gift you got?
Sadly, it was a gift from my son 2 years ago.
It was a watch.
It wasnt that it was an inexpensive digital watch...
It was that I dont wear them. Ever.
So it sits in my closet and beeps forlornly every morning, since the alarm is set and I cant bother to find it and turn it off.
This year he got me a travel mug and a tin of Tim Horton's coffee... which is AWESOME.
