I predict I will be less excited by this year's MacWorld than ever before.
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

Bluray support announced. BD player drives for updated Mac Pros, and BD player drives as a built to order option for iMacs. No portable BD support mentioned. Steve will watch the BD of Ratootoie (sp) when demoing the new Mac Pro.
Promise of burners and burning support ("soon") with a preview of the new DVD Studio Pro.

I think pariah will have a stroke if that happens.

I think I'd burn out a few gears trying to see the logic there as well. Optional external burners maybe but some type of optical drive is gonna have to come with the system internal or not.

Some good stuff from Apple, consistent with their current successful strategy followed by the usual whining from the usual pundits around here about how it doesn't meet their particular view of the world.

Re: Macworld predictions: go on the record!
Dell has a slot-loading BRD drive for the new XPS 1530, but it's an expensive option. Still, it could be possible for Apple to add it as an option for the MBP. Unfortunately the MB won't be able to use BRD (for movies anyway).
I'm still hoping for the subnotebook.

Nope, wouldn't really care at all. Why would a change in models I would never consider buying bother me?
But it won't happen for a whole lot of reasons.

Re: Macworld predictions: go on the record!
I love trying to come up with "apple ideas" and I've come up with a lot of them so here's another really long post from me!
* Cinema displays updated somehow: integrated iSight most likely to be able to
have iChat video work with the Mini and Mac-Pro)
*Mac Pro or Macbook Pro update : new design maybe
*iTunes movie rentals: some sort of HD content. Maybe announce Blu-Ray drives
and the ability to burn downloaded content to DVD/ Blu-Ray. Also DVD ripping in
iTunes
*New Apple TV : possible built in DVD/Blu-Ray player, or merge with a Mini
*Subnotebook : 10" widescreen, built in iSight
And here is something that I think is pretty logical, but I am not sure how I really feel about it : "OSX lite" We all know the iPhone runs a version of OSX and Apple is releasing an SDK for it. With the success of the EEE pc from Asus and its "linux lite" operating system I could see the iPhone OS installed on a subnotebook and have the SDK work for it as well. (I guess the subnotebook would have to have a touch mechanism or something? or apple could figure out a way around it..GUI is there thing!!) Also if it works for a subnotebook why not have it work on the Apple TV/merged mini thing too! (maybe apple tvs support wireless keyboards) This would bring a lot of the basic funtionality people need (internet/email) to the Apple TV price point and perhaps leave room for a newer mac-mini-esque consumer tower. Maybe Apple could make the current mini (integrated graphics included) able to support 3.5" HDDs and also put in one PCIe slot so people could put in a real graphics card or something of their choosing.

Re: Macworld predictions: go on the record!
I'm not so sure the Mac Pro and Cinema displays will see anything at Macworld. The laptops (probably not the macbook though) are a pretty safe bet (includes the subnotebook). They'll probably do something related to the AppleTV due to the movie rental thing.

Re: Macworld predictions: go on the record!
MacPro SchmacPro. I am more concerned with the MacTablet Thin rumors. I want a lightweight very thin 13" at least (With a nice say 15" resolution of 1220x900 at least) with multitouch and the ability to use either your fingers or a pen. Maybe a switch to turn off the multi part if you want.
The OS apps will be updated to take advantage of the multitouch like in parts with zooming and scrolling. This would be allowed by use of fingers.
The screen would swivel like normal tablet/laptops on the PC side.
It would be super thin so there would be no optical drive inside. Instead it would be external like old PowerBooks of the PPC and 680x0 days.
I saw a rumor of a Duo styled all in one docking station that looked like an iMac. I think that's a bit off. But still cool. Just not in the cards.
I am also hoping for an iPod touch memory bump to 32GB at the least model. That is my line for crossing to buy one.
So, when is MacWorld? This week or next week?

Logical. I also suspect LED backlighting

Update:

The rentals are supposedly going to occur. The HD content makes sense and would be nice. I say even on the drive (Not happening, Blu-Ray drive happening, HD-DVD drive happening, dual format drive happening.) Seriously doubt the studios will be that progressive
*New Apple TV : possible built in DVD/Blu-Ray player, or merge with a Mini

*Subnotebook : 10" widescreen, built in iSight
12" wide, optical drive comes standard (unknown if internal or external), iSight

Re: Macworld predictions: go on the record!
I understand Apple has pre-ordered about a billion of the upcoming new generation Xeons so that would be a likely announcement.
I'd bet if Apple does offer a BR drive it will only be available on the 24 inch iMac, Mac Pros and MacBook Pros.

Yeah, I'm beginning to regret not buying back in November.
Now I don't know what I'll do if nothing happens, probably say to hell with it and buy.

I agree the other model won't have them as standard configuration. I suspect they will be BTO options on the 20" iMacs and the Black 14" MacBooks (possibly the white 14" MacBooks too), if not at the introduction of the standardized units, at the speed bump afterwards.

While bluray would be kind of nifty I'd miss not being able to burn dvds (or can they do that these days?)

Re: Macworld predictions: go on the record!
The subnotebook. 12'' widescreen, no optical drive and priced at about $1200.
Mac Pro - Speed bump. A new design would be cool, but I just don't see it happening.
MB/MBP - Nada. Maybe BR support...maybe.
Touch - Memory increase to 32gb.
That is all....
