It may never happen, but I'd like to see Apple build a 36 and 40 inch combo IMac and TV

Re: Macworld predictions: go on the record!

I *think* that since all the lame / boring updates on the iphone and ipod were spread out during the year, we can expect an announcement slightly more interesting than when they showed us the iPod mini, but nothing like the new Mac tower that I'd like to see.

I don't have any predictions but I hope Apple's AirPort line (Extreme router, Extreme wireless card, Express) get updated. On that note, which Intel Macs have wireless cards that are compatible with wardriving on KisMAC?

Apple will offer a new thin client server combo.

It's the family pack of hardware!™

You get 2-5 (depending on price) thin client terminals and a central server that runs the OS and stores your data.

This is the computing direction for the future.
Why spend so much money for redundant processing power and storage for each user with the current system of a complete computer for every user? The future is now!

Re: Macworld predictions: go on the record!

Ah that time of the year. I'll start with the safe bets.

• It's not going to be a giant iPhone ad this year.
• iPhone 1.1.3 will be announced. (Probably touch as well).
• Usual iTunes, iPod figures.
• Blue Ray option in the Mac Pro and maybe high end imac, MacBook Pros.
• If a thin MacBook turns up it will have a suitably GIANT power-brick.

Not so safe bets.
• Mac related updates.
• Appearance of the new thin MacBook minus optical drive. Expect iPod sized HD, higher DPI and LED backlighting.
• Expect Parah to be happy with the higher DPI.

Lets see how I do this year.

I was thinking along those same lines quite awhile ago. That does strike me as a workable thing now that multi-core, vary multi-threaded capable CPUs have become cheap and plentiful.
The thing is my thought on that was based on Apple making gigabit networking standard on all Macs and assumed a wired, truly high speed networking environment. But Apple seems to be less interested in wired networking now.
Is wireless fast enough to enable a server client config like that? I don't really know the bandwidth requirements to make that work well. All the server client systems I have ever seen in my life were wired.
I think the big hitch in that idea is the question whether Apple would be interested in making clients cheap enough to make the system worthwhile. When you can get quad core stand alone systems for well under $1000 any client they came up with would have to be dirt cheap, like $300 or less, to be compelling.

i'm waiting for resolution independence to become a reality in that regard. That modern LCDs have increasing pixel densities is not the real problem. The problem is the software has not evolved at the same pace and is unable to compensate for those high densities.
All things considered high densities are good for image quality, there just needs to be a software solution to unshackle the display from the native resolution to solve accessibility issues.
The day RI gets implemented is the day all my objections to LCDs go away.
Apple already has the scaling engine in place. You can see that if you use the zoom feature. The quality of the enlarged image is really excellent. All they need to do is provide a way to implement that in the monitor setup and things will be golden.
I think we are just a baby step away from RI. The foundation is already in place.

It's going to happen at some stage in Leopard, just a matter of when. Really going to make the computer in the lounge room setup a reality. As it is ATM, you can get away with it, just.

I hope its soon. My mom wants a new Mac and was just going to go order one but I cautioned her that she had better go look at one in person to see if she could read the screen comfortably.
A couple of days latter she called asking me why everything looked so small on Macs now. Fun times trying to explain pixel density to a 76 year old woman.
So a new Mac is out till RI gets done.

Since we are bashing so hard in that other thread, I thought I would point out exactly when I do agree with you.  Excellent points here, and on the story with your Ma.  My mom-in-law has the exact same issue.

Thanks.
As someone who grew up with a handicapped sister accessibility is an issue close to my heart and I have been really disappointed that it has been such a low priority for Apple.
Really, Apple has barely made any progress in this area since OS8. A couple of things have improved but not much considering the amount of time basically nothing improved at all.
Microsoft has absolutely smoked Apple when it comes to serving the needs of people with special needs.

Re: Macworld predictions: go on the record!

A lot of Apple's apps are RI now though many still have slight glitches. The compatibility mode will also work for most other well designed apps. Unfortunately it will be a while till all the apps are 100% RI compatible. As it stands at the moment, if you need RI, you can use it, just not for everything.

Just putting it out there, but it's usually a mistake I make to think my parents want the same level of quality as I do.

But I wouldn't. I'm so anal m OCD would have that resolution to native within 5 minutes. I just can't stand looking at an LCD display set to a lower res. (I had to bump up my sisters Dell when I was transferring her files a couple weeks ago. So far she hasn't mentioned it, but at least everything's not blurry.)

With me it's not a matter of accessibility, it's a matter of my sanity. If I walk into a house with a computer whose LCD is set low, I can smell it. And I will seek it out. Without permission. blush

It's interesting with RI. The apps that aren't transitioning to RI seem to work well. iTunes is a good example. Safari is almost there was well. Though the Finder, it looks like somewhere along the line they collectively went 'oh smurf it' and gave up making it RI for the time being.

Black everything:

-Black iPod shuffle
-Black MacBook and MacBook Pro
-Black Keyboard
-Black Mouse
-Black Mac Pro

And anything else that Apple makes that's not already black will now come in black. SAME PRICE as the non-black versions.
