New Mac Pro
8 core is the new standard. Up to 4 TB of storage.
See for yourself at apple.com. With this happening a week ahead of Macworld, this brings up new speculation as to the "big" announcements that may be taking place. Very interesting times, folks.

No blu ray or hd dvd drives on the mac pro, this should be interesting.

Re: New Mac Pro
Hmmm, sucks there is no Bluray and the 8800 is crippled with only 512MB of VRAM. Oh well, the prices look pretty good and they kept a single Quad Chip in there as well, maybe Pariah will be happy.
I just may be picking one up. But in all honesty I would probably just use it as a render box for Lightwave. Decisions...Decisions...

Re: New Mac Pro
The 8800 GT is hardly crippled with 512, but if you want workstation, the optional Quadro packs 1.5GB of GDDR3.
(Kind of a shame they didn't wait for the forthcoming ATi FireGL. The usual has been reversed and it burninates the pricier Quadros for a change. Might not be shipping yet, tho. Last I heard it packs up to 2GB VRAM, IIRC GDDR4).

I'm absolutely enraged that apple would not include firewire 3200.
because i would use it everyday. and it's cheap.

Re: New Mac Pro
Apple dropped the new Mac Pros so I ordered mine with my student developer discount saving me a nice $1000 on the pricetag, I mourn the estimated ship date though (Feb 13 >.<) but at least after a couple years of waiting it will be on it's way in a few weeks (hopefully fewer). I went with....
Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeo
2GB (2x1GB)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb
One 16x SuperDrive
AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
APPLE WIRELESS MIGHTY MOUSE
WIRELESS KEYBD
the $80 500gb hard drive was tempting, but I don't want something that big to fail, and my spare hard drives I have waiting to slap in are all 300gb/320gb so would be hard to back it up, maybe next black friday I'll upgrade, but since right now I'm doing fine with a 200 external and 120 in my laptop, I'm sure I'll be perfectly oke with 1.2Tb heh
Also have to wait for otherworldcomputing to get the 800mhz ram so I can buy from them

This kinda sets it up for those fill-in-the-gap predictions, I think.

Other than a case redesign, which didn't happen this time (And why should it really, it's nice as it is.), just higher specs.

Re: New Mac Pro
It's a little soon for Blu-Ray & FW3200. I mean how long ago were the Blu-Ray studio format settlements (a couple days ago)? What's the cost of the Blu-Ray hardware (rather high)? How long ago was FW3200 officially announced (a few weeks ago)? Apple's been planning and working on this hardware for months and wants at least a supportable system. I bet we'll probably see BR and/or FW3200 next refresh.

Let's wait for the dust to settle first. And the prices to drop. Sure one day I want an HD player in my MacBook whatever I get, maybe even a combination HD-DVD/Blu-Ray/DVD/CD burner and player or something.

I wonder if I could talk the local GM dealer into throwing one in to close the deal on my new GMC?

Do the new cards pass the BAT test or not? You kind of have that front locked down.

Yeah good point? And, I can't wait for some benchmark tests between the old X1900XT and this new 8800 GT.
