how to speed up a redonculusly slow g3 powerbook
I've recently registered here, but I've been with you guys a long time, I've gotten my hands on my own notebook, and upgraded it to os 10.3.5 but... it takes a VERY long time to start up any help?

If you actualy have a g3 powerbook ... the fastest processor is 500mHz and max ram could be 512 .. but most g3 Powerbooks have much less speed and max ram ... so yeah ... the best you are going to be able to do is "very slow" to "slow"

My Pismo begs to differ. I have 1gb of Ram in there. Its fully useable as is, but don't plan on doing any major projects on it. I'm running 10.4.11 on mine.

But it works flawlessly from most people I have heard. Defintaly more RAM plus there could be a G4 550MHz upgrade for the processer if you really wanted it(if it is the oldest powerbook g3)

For some reason Apple never updates the specs for their machines even if compatible parts such as larger RAM become available. For more up-to-date info, you should refer to Apple History or MacTracker (donationware).

Yeppers. When I had my old G3 AIO Apple said it could only hold 384 meg of ram but it actually could hold 768.

i'm back, found out that i have 192 mb of ram, and a 333 megahertz processor, so if i can find some cheap upgrades, then i can *pimp* my mac.
anyway are there any noob java programers?

I would definitely find some ram for that. My Wallstreet 266 was unusable in os X with the original 64mb. I went to www.eshop.macsales.com and they hooked me up with 384mb. It is still not as fast as my mac pro (obviously) but it serves the purpose.

It's because they don't go back and test every discontinued machine when larger RAM modules become available. They only list tested configurations.

That makes sense, but Apple doesn't update the specs for current machines when newer parts become available as well. Most recent example was the first Core 2 Duo MacBooks (not the current ones with the Santa Rosa Core 2 Duos)--Apple was selling those with a maximum option of 2 GBs RAM when they could use 3 GBs.

Definitely get more RAM. I can't imagine running X on 192mb. My G4 was terrible with 256mb. Max out the RAM at 1gb (or 512, whatever it is. Just max it out). As for the processor, there may be a G4 upgrade out there, but you really need to ask how much you want to spend.
