I used a new Zune today...

And I have to say, I was extremely impressed.

The new UI is very clean, compared to the old one. The new touch-sensitive button thing is also extremely well designed, and the UI is inertia-aware, so flicking up/down works as expected. These two features combined make for an excellent iPod competitor.

In fact, I think I may have even liked the UI a tad better than the iPod Classic because it seemed less cluttered to me. And it's more focused than the iPod Touch which I think compared to the regular iPod, the iPhone, and the Zune, has a very unfocused UI that's less well suited for music browsing/listening than the regular iPods, and too mediocre for its other web-enabled abilities. Plus, wifi syncing is a kick-ass feature that Apple should steal ASAP.

It wouldn't take much for Apple to software update the iPod Touch to completely blow it out of the water, as a music player, but if I wasn't so wooed by the awesome web browser on the iPod Touch, i'd get a Zune, and UI-wise, i would easily take it over an iPod classic or Nano.

The new touch button is the feature that makes it a nice device, so the old zunes still suck.

Unfortunately, Zunes don't work on Macs, and don't sync with iTunes (where all my music is neatly tagged and rated already), and my current 3G iPod is still going very strong (almost TOO strong wink ).

Yeah, a lot of people have told me that the Zune 2 is a pretty well refined devise. That said, I've yet to play with one. shrug

I'd give it a shot if it were mac compatible. Do they play flac files? That would be a useful feature that the iPod does not support also.

Re: I used a new Zune today...

My argument on other MP3 players is: It's not so much the little box you plug your headphones into, It's the software that keeps all your stuff together, and makes it easy to get new stuff at one place, instead of going all over the internet, gettin' your geek on in different ways at different sites.
BTW:

Isn't the rest of the world, like, sueing Apple cause iTunes wont work with other players, or somethin?
What's the difference?
MS has zero mkt. share in the MP3 player biz.
(just guessin' here. It's late. don't make me research, k?)

Re: I used a new Zune today...

A co worker of mine has a new Zune. It felt nice, but the interface still had some head scratchers in there.

And, while it felt nice, it didn't feel as sturdy as an iPod. The psychological effect of having some metal parts on an iPod is huge.

What Zune were you using?

The one I played with was HD based, and was mostly metal. Not one of the lame plastic ones from last-gen.

French Canadians are just weird...

As for the Zune, there's a 2.0? I thought the Zune was still in Alpha.

It was definitely a new one. I guess it just felt flimsy and I assumed it was plastic... it didn't feel sturdy at all.

You make it sound like it needs to be a load bearing musical device.  Then again, I'd have  no qualms about using a Zune to fix a wobbly table.

The hardware is as good if not better than the iPod.  I like my Zune but hate the software.  Zune software stinks in fact

THE SOFTWARE SUCKS BALLS!!!!!!

I avoid buying Microsoft stuff as much as possible just to keep them humble.  wink

That said, the 2nd gen Zune is a much better looking and operating device that that smurf they first put out there.

If I wasn't so accustomed to the iPod already, I'd give it a shot.  There were some of the things as I was messing with it that just seemed odd to me.  Quirky stuff.  But it's a solid device overall.

The Zune cannot be any worse than my iPod. If the were available in and compatible with Canada I'd try one.

No the zune is a finalized product, its the Zune software you run on your PC that is in an alpha state. Get it right wink

Re: I used a new Zune today...

The only Microsoft product I would ever feel comfortable buying would be an XBox.  Microsoft has no doubt improved the Zune, but it's not like it would take much to improve over their initial offering.

Good hardware isn't really worth much without good software to drive it.  None of the other "iPod competitors" offer a quality software product to interface with the device.  This is also the area where I trust Microsoft the least.

Of course, as the owner of an iPod Touch, I wouldn't consider any other mp3 player at this point.  While I wouldn't mind having a little more storage, there really isn't that many weaknesses with this device.  It does require you to be savvy about playlists though, which I can see being a drawback for some.

Re: I used a new Zune today...

I don't think you guys really understand how awful the software truly is....I recommend downloading and installing it.  You will understand.  I had to spend hours fixing my ID3 tags because if they weren't exactly right it wouldn't import them correctly.

It would literally put all my Hannah Montana songs in my High School Musical Soundtrack album and my High School Musical Sountrack in my Vanilla Ice....I could go on with bad album references but you get the idea

EDIT/UPDATE - Sure enough, the Zune has been upgraded to proto-vapourware for Canada. The Canadian Zune Marketplace is not so confirmed yet. I'm definitely going to wait a while. I'll probably run out of patience and buy another iPod. Hopefully I'll get a receipt/warranty this time.
