Re: UT3

/me remembers the XP dual-core patch and/or this:

AMD Dual-Core Optimizer - The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Tec … dir=COGA01

After a reinstall or major mucking about inside, maybe this/ those need reinstall also? I used to occasionally see the UT framerate counter spin up to 300-400 f/s under OpenGL, but never had that warp-speed game issue.

I never had a problem with speed. Were you using D3D with vsync enabled?

Dual-Core Optimizer...Check!

MOAR RANTING...
Installed, rather tried to install Google Earth Sat. The install failed with some weird error message. Did a reboot to try agian and BAM! The fraking thing stalled and wouldn't boot into anything no normal, no safe mode, nothing. Gah! Not again! I thought my hardware and software issues were done. Things were working so well. Xp's recover couldn't even fix it. Once agian a fresh XP install was done yesterday.

Unreal and UT do the same thing. The best I can explain it is it plays in bursts. A few seconds of really fast followed by a one second pause...rinse, repeat. Like it loads and plays, loads and plays. No smoothness at all.

D3D, check. Vsync...nope. I normally have it off because my monitor's refresh rate is at 120. Way above the FPS I have most games config'd to. But yeah with U/UT they would be running much faster than 120FPS. I'll try that....once I get the POS..err PC back to operational state.

Re: UT3

It boggles my mind that my years-delayed upgrade box might be operational and stable before yours stops asploding. confused It's mostly been waiting the last couple months for my shoulder to heal enough to heft it around and finalize the wiring & peripherals.

That's the frustrating part. Here my first home built, water cooled rig is still happily humm'n along. The kids have it now. Never a problem. Ever. This one I could kick to the curb.

EDIT

This is where the Mac rules. You blow an OS install. No problem, reinstall and everything else still works. BUT NOOOOO not XP. Blow your registry and you're smurfed. I'm getting real tired of reinstalling apps. Apps that are there but won't work because it's a new registry.

Re: UT3

The Registry was once, in days of DOS, a decent idea, and still comes in handy on occasion... but backwards compatibility seems to have made it impractical to shed so far. Seems every time I read about Winders down the road, there's a version that finally gets rid of it, but it never happens. It is now, by far, the worst thing overall about Windows, bar none.

It almost doesn't matter now what I DL or where I move it to on this machine, as long as it's not an app or wholesale moving of large directories; for lo, I will soon has a new machine with all-new, fresh Registries. Woohoo! big_smile

Are you sure your RAM is OK. What you are describing sounds like a bad RAM stick to me. Suggest you get one of those RAM stress testing utilities (I know no names) and let it run for 24 hours and see what happens.

Re: UT3

Could be at that. Memtest86+ looks promising...

Based on the well-known original memtest86 written by Chris Brady, memtest86+ is a port by some members of the x86-secret team, now working at www.canardplus.com. Our goal is to provide an up-to-date and completly reliable version of this software tool aimed at memory failures detection.

Memtest86+ is, like the original, released under the terms of the Gnu Public License (GPL). No restrictions for use, private or commercial exist other than the ones mentioned in the Gnu Public License (GPL). Texts about the original version was taken from the original website and written by Chris Brady.

-= History =-

The first version of Memtest86+ was released on early 2004, based on memtest86 v3.0 that was not updated since mid-2002. Our main challenge was to provide an up-to-date version of this useful tool, as reliable than the original. [..]

Pretty sure it's ok. All my blow ups have happened during some software adventure and have only corrupted the OS. The first & second times was because UT3 was crashing so much it killed the OS. This last time was during a Google Earth install. Up to that point things had been running good.

I do however think I have a bad SATA port or bus. Which may have been the root of all this evil.

Re: UT3

*groans*
Has anyone yet heard any new info on UT3 for Mac?  MacSoft has 2 days before their "spring 2008" deadline is up, and I haven't heard smurf in too long.  I'm really tempted to go buy the CE edition of the PC version, install Win in Boot Camp and start fragging that way.  I'd just really prefer to run it natively in Leopard and not have to reboot just to play my $30 copy of UT3 CE on Win.

I so desperately need updates on the Mac version.

Re: UT3

Yeah, that 'Coming Spring '08' ad at IMG is getting a little old.

But no. Last I checked Ryan's .plan file, a couple weeks back, there was no mention of it. Don't think there has been in months. Maybe he's wrestling with OpenGL change issues in the latest version of Leo.

Re: UT3

Do you think they'll still bother after what a bomb this game was?  (Something I don't really understand...I tried the demo and it's great fun.  I heard lots of nitpicking about the menu system, but I heard the same with UT2003-4 and it didn't seem that bad to me.)

Re: UT3

Good Q. That ad's now been replaced by a NWN2 ad... let's see if any new ones pop up like "Coming Soon."

I'm seeing nothing nowhere.  I guess I'll just have to install Red Faction and continue to wait patiently.
