Re: Pet Peeves

The rules differ depending on whether you're writing for an American audience or for a British/international audience. I'll discuss the American system, since that is what I know best. Perhaps someone else could weigh in on the British system through a comment.

    * Periods and commas: inside the quotation marks
    * Colons and semicolons: outside the quotation marks
    * Question marks and exclamation points: (a) inside if the question or exclamation is part of the quotation, and (b) outside if the question or exclamation is not part of the quotation

"Regardless of logic" is correct.

I've never been corrected by any English professor, regardless of their pedantry, for placing periods outside of quotation marks when appropriate.

But technically, it's never actually "appropriate."  Do you see such usage in print?

You're free to continue doing whatever you want....I'm just pointing out what the style books say (and to debunk the earlier assertion that a teacher was wrong for telling them to place the period inside the quotes).

Thanks matt, neither do I.  That doesn't change my opinion on the subject, however.

I was attempting to make a certain point that I'm sure you got without violating the DBAJ rule.

But, if you must have an answer, take the two Queer as Folk characters Emmett Honeycutt and Brian Kinney, and combine them.  That's the stupid stereotype.

I'm not positive because I don't have the guide in front of me, but I believe in legal writing (at least in court docs) you would place the period (that wasn't actually part of the quote) inside the quotation marks, but also enclosed by brackets:

"Not the end of the sentence[.]"

As far as I can tell, the American style is to place it inside the quotes, regardless of reason.

Can you find any documentation for what it is you're talking about?  How was your use not the same as the other uses?

Matt, you did your weird 'delete and repost' thing.  Now I'm quoting you before you even say what I'm quoting.

Well they may have initially been written prior to the internet, but they're still being constantly revised.

I know, and I expect that in 20 years or so, the American way of quoting will be uncommon. It doesn't make any sense.

Parents who:

just sit/stand there while their kid is behaving obnoxiously.
own those double or triple wide strollers. No wonder they need SUVs.

"Handicapped parking in general."?

Maybe you'll be embarrassed when you remember this when you're old and maneuvering a walker.

Of course, when you're young you never think that will happen to you.

I agree with the first paragraph, though. I'd sum it up as "Parents", just to be a jerk about it. tongue

Ug.  Aaron's aunt and uncle will change their twins right on the living room couch.  I'll be sitting at the table enjoying my Thanksgiving dinner, smell a nasty smell and look over and there they are- dirty diapers and naked butts squirming all over the furniture, right by everyone who is eating.  Why?!  Just why?!

Re: Pet Peeves

Meh,

I've changed my kid's diapers in public whenever the need exists.
($75% of the time it's just wet).
No big deal. Stuff happens.

No more gross than letting a dog pee and poop all over the place.
(people who don't pick up after their dog are bad people)
We never bought a changing table. (We've changed them on the couch many times -a diaper pad is more than suficient)

I couldn't imagine having a double wide stroller (never seen a triple). I live in the city, I couldn't get on the subway or in the supermarket aisle with a double wide.

Re: Pet Peeves

Yeah, but don't change them right next to me while I'm trying to eat dinner.  Please?  And risk getting poop on your own couch and not someone else's.

I think that most people find changing tables are a waste of money.
