"used to" I've been writing checks probably longer than you've been alive.
They've changed to system so that the money comes out of your account right away.

True, kiting checks was common practice not that long ago. Mail the check on Thursday knowing you'd be depositing your paycheck on Friday.
And I know I've been writing checks longer than Dan's been alive.

Re: Pet Peeves
How is that a felony?
When I write out a check, it takes 3-4 days to get back to my bank. If I write a check on the weekend and get paid Monday morning (usually 2am w/direct deposit) and the check doesn't come through till Tuesday or Wednesday, then how is that wrong? What about the people with overdraft protection? If they write a check for more than is in their account, is it still a felony?
Oh, and user, I get really upset when stores do that damn "instant" check thing. I politely tell them that they just wasted both their time and mine because I could have used my check card if they had bothered to tell me, and then I tell them that I will never be back. A store that doesn't trust me as a customer doesn't deserve my business.

not really. The Zune (by itself) is pretty decent. The software and music store for it, however, is a different story.so? hack it to run rockbox or something.
um...I'll get right on it?
I was just making a point that not everything MS does is crap. I have no reason or motivation to hack a zune to work a different way.
Office:Mac is good, too.

Wait, let me get this straight. You want to fault the store when you just wrote a check for money you don't actually have?

Well that certainly is a fascinating notion. Which MS product do you think is a good one?

No, the entire Zune itself is fine. I think the interface is fine. The only thing I'd like to see on the Zune is a scroll wheel, but I think Apple has that patented, because I never see it on other players.
The Zune software that you load on your PC is what sucks.

I wrote a check for money that will be there when the check clears my bank. I have never had a problem with the money not being there when the check clears because if needed, I'll pull the funds from savings to cover it if the expected deposit doesn't show up on time. I also leave extra time for the check to clear and usually only write out checks 2 days in advance max. What I don't appreciate is when the store doesn't trust their customers. That's probably why I prefer local, small town businesses over the "Huge Mega-Mart" mentality that everyone else seems to have.

Writing a check for an amount you do not have at the time the check is written is fraud. Given the way you can be charged with felonies for sneezing on a cop these days, I would not be at all surprised to see check floating as a felony.

Not sure if you are aware of it or not, but there is a simple, elegant solution to the Zune software problem. Do some research and see if you can find one of those elusive iPods. I lucked out and found enough to fit my needs and I found it is so good, I won't even consider anything else.

Not all of the customers that walk into the store actually plan to pay for the items they select. Some hide things under their clothes, yet others will try to take the merchandise using fraudulent checks or credit cards. There is enough of this going on that the big stores must train their underpaid help to distrust everyone and follow the procedures. IF thievery wasn't going on, the need for the instant debit to the account, or credit card verification would never have been implemented.
The small store owner can treat you differently from a stranger, especially when you are a regular.

Which is a moderately sized mortgage payment, so it's not like it's hard to blast past that.

A prosecutor would have to prove that there was an intent to deprive the check assignee of payment for their services. The simple fact that a check is bounced when paying the mortgage wouldn't cut it.
The check writer usually has to be given a limited amount of time to make up for the worthless check.

Exactly. Its not illegal to float a check, its only illegal to bounce a check and not make restitution for it. My sister had tons of problems with Wells Fargo and had to deal with this problem on many occasions. She would deposit a check and then write out checks for bills. Then she would get calls from the collection agencies saying she owed them money. It turns out that the bank would only deposit a small amount of the check and then hold the rest for a week or so to make sure it cleared the other bank. In the mean time, her checks would show up at the bank and would overdraft her. I can see them doing this with an out of the area personal check, but these were either bank checks or paychecks. Needless to say, she ditched that bank and went to a credit union and couldn't be happier.

Yeah, I like my iPod. But if MS ever makes a Zune that works with iTunes and can play AAC (protected too), I'd buy it.
