Oh well, more space for me back there and less likely to get dented!

Re: Pet Peeves

Come on guys, tell us how you REALLY feel about Wal-Mart.

In college, we used to go at 1 or 2 in the morning to do shopping because it was the least crowded time to go.  I always did feel bad about not paying admission for the freak show though...

I don't particularly like Wal-Mart, but I do like their prices on a lot of stuff.  Haven't actually set foot in one for something like a year though, now that I think of it.

Only in America can a person get a handicapped tag for being too godamned fat to walk more than ten feet without suffering a coronary meltdown.

I am not what you would consider a "fatty."  I fit in a single coach class seat without bothering the person next to me at all.  However, I don't have the time to maintain a perfect body, and I find people like you who not only obsess over it but act like a complete dick to those with a few extra pounds highly annoying.  You're just as bad as those you rally against.

Re: Pet Peeves

My beef with the fatties is their lack of will power. Are you obsessive with food?  If not, and you're a little chunky, that's fine.  Clearly from my post above I'm talking about grossly overweight persons who invade my personal space. I think I have a right to have a problem with someone else's fatty ass invading my own personal bubble!

And don't even get me started on not having enough time to maintain a body.

And don't even get me started on not having enough time to maintain a body.

Sometimes it's not about food. A few years ago (about 2000-2001) I gained a lot of weight, suddenly, but my eating habits and diet had not changed. I gained almost 100 pounds over just under 18 months, and my energy level dropped so low that I wouldn't even change channels with the remote, choosing to watch what was on 'cause it was too much work to move my thumb. I kept falling asleep at work. I didn't want to eat, so I didn't, but I kept getting bigger.
Finally, my wife, (after deciding that a year's worth of being angry with me for being lazy wasn't motivating me), made a Dr. appointment.
I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, and started on Synthyroid.
The first dose was like your first taste of meth. I was so fired up, I couldn't understand why synthyroid wasn't a street drug, it did so much for me.
Of course, that wore off and my body became accustomed to it.
Over the past seven years I've managed to loose most of the weight I put on, so I'm down to 195 now, but I've got a long way to go to get back to 160, where I was  when i got "sick".

The thing is, sometimes fat people are fat for a lot of different reasons. It has nothing to do with food or personal discipline.

Perhaps you should be a little less judgmental. I promise you, every one of those "fatties" you deride for "invading your personal space" would rather not.
If it bothers you so much, you should move. After all, you're so fit and trim and active, I'm sure it is much easier for you to get out of their way, than it is for them to get out of yours.

Re: Pet Peeves

We all know that there are exceptions to the rule when it comes to obesity.  However, let's be real and look at the trends of obesity and morbid obesity over the past few decades.  Surely we can't blame hypothyroidism and other legitimate medical conditions on these skyrocketing numbers.  The vast majority of obese are in their condition because of poor diet and exercise, which comes down to choice.

I have every sympathy in the world for people with medical conditions that are beyond their control.  I do not have sympathy for someone who balloons up to 300 or 400 pounds because he can't put down the chips and take a walk.  I think that's where Crashing is coming from.

As someone who rides a public train every single day, 1 hour each way to and from work, I'm also pretty unhappy when a very large person comes and plops down next to me.  I'm not skinny or super-fit by any definition, but at 6' 0" and about 200 lbs, I'm not all that huge either.

I also don't think anyone here is picking on anyone for being "a little heavy".  I know I could stand to lose a little bit of gut.  But come on, does anyone here, in all honesty, not get a little annoyed when you're on a plane or train and someone who's 300 pounds or higher comes and plops down next to you?  Give me a break.  I have no problem is someone who's 200-250 is next to me, because they don't press me up against the wall of the train car and prohibit me from moving.

This isn't about poking fun of someone and calling them "Fatty Fat Fat Fat", it's about being publicly inconvenienced.  And no, don't give me the "Well the big people are inconvenienced too because the seats are too small."  They can (generally speaking of course, there are exceptions) choose to reduce their size and stop being inconvenienced.  It's a matter of will power.

Re: Pet Peeves

Just two things
1. Perhaps many of the 300/400 pounders did get that way by their own actions or lack thereof, but I don't think any of them did it on purpose, and I doubt any of them enjoy it. They know it's not "the seats are too small", They know it's that their ass is too big. But at that point, they need help. And that cost money. Studies have shown that the lower income population tend to be the most obese. (there are several theories as to why), and regardless of attitude or effort, losing 200 pounds is not the kind of thing that happens overnight.

2. When that morbidly obese person sits down beside you on the train or plane, how can you tell the difference between

I have every sympathy in the world for people withmedical conditions that are beyond their control .  I do not have sympathy for someone who balloons up to 300 or 400 pounds because he can't put down the chips and take a walk.

How do you choose whom to be sympathetic toward, and whom to reject.
Believe me, if the solution was as simple as

put down the chips and take a walk

we would not have half the health problems that we do in this country.

All I really want to say is, "Don't be hate'n"
Feel sorry for these people. You don't know how they got to be they way they are, so don't be judging their values or morals or integrity or intelligence or bank accounts by their size.
Yes, some of them probably do deserve your scorn and disdain, and others your sympathy,  but how can you tell which is which.
Give them the benefit of the doubt.

Give 'em a break.
