Damn this sucks
ram and case fan for my new puter arrived.
Everything was put together on my bench. Powered it on - got proper post beep.
Moved it into my office, attached everything - it was working sweet.
Then it suddenly powered itself off and would not post. No video to video card, no post beep.
I tried everything I know - at this point it is either bas PS (but everything seems to be fine - fans power on etc.), bad video card (the bleepin' mobo manual does not say whether or not a bad video card will cause failure to post), bad cpu, or bad mobo.
Details of what I did are at ars in mobo forum, but at this point I'm waiting for a Sempron from newegg to rule out the CPU. I don't think it's the cpu, but if it is - I'll at least have something to use while dealing with AMD - and if it is not - then I'll have an inexpensive emergency spare.
If it's not the cpu, I'll have to borrow or buy a video card to rule that out. I may buy a new PS just to rule that out as well - the PS I used is one that is new old stock but was known to have some problems, though it shouldn't exhibit them yet.
But Son of a Barbara Bush.
The damn thing was working and doing what it was suppose to do - until it just crapped out.

have you tried kicking it? or at the very least banging on the case?

Re: Damn this sucks
I figured it was loose connection, so I doused it with salt water to help make the connections better.
I've ordered a Sempron - that's a cheap way to rule out the CPU. And I'll have an emergency spare on hand when everything gets settled.
I suspect there's an issue with the motherboard itself, a hairline fracture that expanded as the board warmed up. When I use to fix macs for ComputerWare - these kind of issues were almost always PS or logic board. Since all the fans and drives and lights work, I don't think it's the PS.

Re: Damn this sucks
Does it post again if you take out the video card? That would confirm that there likely is some issue with the video card. If you take it out and it still won't post, then I'd suspect the motherboard.

Re: Damn this sucks
Every geek should have one of these. Although, in all honestly, you can build your own with a couple resistors and a few LEDs.
If all the fans/drives/lights work, then the PSU is good:
1) Take the parts out of the case, lay them out on the desk, and see if they work. If the motherboard is shorting against the case, it'll refuse to POST. I had one motherboard that hated my case, so I ended up putting a sheet of wax paper underneath it.
2) Of course try different RAM, and uninstall/reinstall the chips you have; single, in pairs, you know the drill.
3) Reseat the video card, try a PCI video card if you have one (and, honestly, who doesn't have one in the bottom of their closet?)
4) See if it will post without any drives attached.

Re: Damn this sucks
a bad power-supply will cause those symptoms "then it suddenly powered itself off and would not post. No video to video card, no post beep. (but everything seems to be fine - fans power on etc.)"
we will even get the power led to come on with the fans
we get that all the time where I work ... replace the PS and all is good.
if it is a bad CPU, mem, or video card ... It really should give some sort of beeps ... but then again I don't have experience with your particular motherboard .. so I don't know what beeps it does make when it encounters a problem

Re: Damn this sucks
Yeah - I'm really thinking PS as well.
That's my next step after the Sempron arrives.
If the Sempron does not work, I order a power supply.
I want a Sempron anyway - I want to build a mythtv box - I'm thinking of using an AMD compatible shuttle w/ a hardware mpeg2 encoder/decoder in the pci slot and gigabit ethernet in the pci-express slot.
With hardware mpeg2 encoding/decoding - it would work with even a 700MHz PIII - so the sempron should be more than adequate.
I may be able to get PS replaced for free, there was a known defect in this model, I have to call Antec. The defect usually doesn't show up so fast though (it's new old stock).
From what I hear, they (Antec) were replacing them for free. Hopefully that is still going on.

I'm in luck - I just checked, it has a 3 year warranty from Antec - so I'm good to go if it is the PS.

I think it knew you wanted to put the *nix on it.

It should be grateful - the only non *nix option for this hardware Windoze.

Well - my Sempron is suppose to arrive on Wed. That will verify the CPU is not the problem, at which point Antec wants me to try a bench boot (outside of case) which if it fails, they will replace my power supply.
I already know a bench boot isn't going to work, it's not a shorting problem. I have to pick up a PC speaker from somewhere because my case, it's a real PITA to get the PC speaker out, and I need to hear the post beeps.
I might have a case in my closet with a PC speaker I can steal but I think I already stripped everything from it.

How, pray tell, do you "know" that?

No built in buzzer?

They're like $4. It's a good excuse to buy some OEM software or a new mouse and save on shipping.

No built in buzzer on the board - built in pc speaker in case, but pulling it would be difficult - it would require removal of the front panel and the drives.
I think I can get a pc speaker for $5.00 or so at a local pc shop.

Well - my new cpu (sempron for ruling out the x2 as defective) is suppose to arrive today - so today I can fill out the RMA request on my power supply, so hopefully beginning of march, I'll finally be able to boot this baby and install
This is why sane people buy a PC.
I don't build a lot of PCs, and this is the second time I got a defective part. First time, the defective part was a case that arrived severely damaged.
But I never claimed to be sane, not that I can remember - and if I did, I lied.
Oh - and my old case in the closet did have the pc speaker in it. Only thing still in it.

So far I've been lucky building PCs. All I can say is thank Zeus for Newegg.

Re: Damn this sucks
It's the power supply.
It won't even keep the fans powered now.
The only reason it was this much trouble is because I didn't have spare parts to troubleshoot it. I've never seen a bad Antec before which is why I thought it might be the CPU - but it's definitely the power supply.
So tomorrow it gets shipped back to Antec. Rumor is (from other people with this model) they'll replace it with an EartWatt's 430 - which is a green power supply (eco friendlier). Something about 80% efficiency.
So now I have the sempron in the board - I think I'll just leave the sempron in until the OS is installed - and then switch it out for the X2. The sempron will eventually be used in my replacement file server (I know that box is going to have something fail soon - it's working perfectly, but it's really old tech)

Re: Damn this sucks
Antec sent me an EarthWatts 430
The OS is installing now
btw - when removing and replacing CPUs - I use to clean them as best I can - this time, I tried a product called ArtiClean (from the makers of AS5) - it's a two step process. The first step removes the old gunk - and it does a spectacular job. The second "prepares" the surface - and from looking at the makeup pad when I was done, removes a lot of oils that you can't see - because the CPU and heat sink looked CLEAN after the first bottle, but the makeup pad was black after the second bottle.
Anyway - all appears to be good, CentOS 5.1 x86_64 is installing

This thing flies!
I mean seriously, it flies!
The computer it is replacing would take ~ 10 hours to compile FireFox 2. This thing did it in under half an hour.
And she's running just dandy

Ouch! What the heck were you replacing? My old DV 400 only took 8 or 9 normally.

Re: Damn this sucks
A duron 1.6 GHz - but the Duron only had 512MB of ram, and also had a lot of daemons running. I suspect the issue is it had to swap to disk to do it. Durons also have really small cache which may have been an issue.
It's also not "stock" firefox - it's Fedora patched and yes, the patching does result in a longer build time. Basically it includes a bunch of language pack stuff and compiles against system libraries and it took a really long time (on the old machine) to extract the debuginfo package and package it (debuginfo package lets you run the app w/o debugging enabled but be able to install the debug symbols for better bug report if you end up with crashes).

Similar RAM in my case, Firefox for me was stock save for the fact it was G3 optimized. I did tend to do other things as it was building though like chat, surf, & iTunes.

I think I was mis-remembering the time.
I think it was about 10 hours for both firefox 2 AND thunderbird 2.
Still though - the new x2 smokes the old box
