Some More 10.5.2 Features Revealed
Looks like the haters of the menu bar will be pleased with the new release coming soon. Also looks like network disks will (possibly) finally be supported for Time Machine.
Go here for the scoop on these and other leaked features/changes:

Re: Some More 10.5.2 Features Revealed
I think they should get all the bugs squashed before working on new features, but the stacks fix is good.

Re: Some More 10.5.2 Features Revealed
I imagine there are a ton of bug fixes as well, but the new features are icing on the cake. The ones listed have all been universal complaints, and if anything, shows Apple is listening to its users.

List view in Stacks

Wow, this should totally appease those who were pissed that Stacks dropped hierarchical menus from the dock.

Yeah, this was revealed to be a new feature in 10.5.2 when it was first seeded and should make most stacks critics happy.

I wish it'd fix the stupid window view thing [where folders don't remember their view setting... unless you check a box in every damn window.]

Re: Some More 10.5.2 Features Revealed
I'd also like to note that 10.5.2 is approaching the magnitude of a service pack in terms of fixes/changes as well as in sheer file size. This is going to be a big one.

- Fixed issue with Finder and column view
I'm constantly amazed how explanatory links to that are provided but never followed and read.

It might help if the link goes somewhere.

You can't assume that that's what they're talking about; it could be referring to the bug where the Finder crashes if you right-click and Get Info in an empty column. The view settings thing was a conscious decision on Apple's part, and I don't think they'd describe it as an "issue".

Heh, hit wrong (html) button rather than the one I meant (quote).
I yet to see or reproduce that crash you are talking about and lord knows I've tried, Miles.
Temporally setting Column View did immediately cancel the view settings I've chosen, however, despite "Always view as" being checked.
However you could be right it could be related to a different view setting bug.

I fail to see how this is a bug. Constant window options throughout the interface is finally working in Leopard. (I can see that you would want some windows to be different though.)

Exactly. It comes down to personal preference... and preferences should have a checkbox!

Re: Some More 10.5.2 Features Revealed
Apple needs to just adopt a browser that spawns Finder Windows. Separating the browser from individual folder windows would solve the whole problem.
You could have multiple Browsers open but when you doubled clicked on a folder in the browser it would open a folder window that could not turn into a Browser window, because it's a Finder Window not a Browser window.

That's a level of complexity that most users don't need. I vote for the checkbox in the finder, but it should default to how it is now and it should be an option on a folder's window or a shortcut. That way it makes it easy to swap between custom and system wide views.

I think the mixing of the metaphors causes complexity and confusion while separating the Finder and the Browser would simplify and and make things more consistent.
Back before OSX I used Greg's Browser which was a very prescient implementation of what the OSX browser view turned out to be. Using Greg's browser with the old Finder worked great. It's the mixing of two very different approaches to folder viewing that causes the current problems.
Having a separate "Browser.app" would allow browser fans to have exactly what they wanted while also allowing the Finder to have actual, reliable and persistent view settings. This makes the strength of the browser not stomp all over the views concept.

Hopefully they do fix Time Machine's wireless issues with AEBS (and other routers). I recommended the AEBS to a friend based on this feature prior to Leopard's release.

I don't think this update will completely solve the AEBS issues as I understand them but will probably mitigate the issues. I think the actual solution will take a combination of this and a AEBS firmware update.
