titling untitled folder

got a new imac, leopard too.
so since my old mac classic 20 years ago, i can make a folder and call it anything i want, it's file/make new folder/ untitled folder. click in that name, delete it, type in name of folder.
not this time. i put the cursor in the box, and nothing happens. can'tdelete untitled folder, can'tmtypein the box.
i asked help and it said select  folder, hit return and type. that does not work either and why should it? what's wrong with the way i always did it in mac os whatever, then 9 then x then x.2?

300 new apps and i can't name my folders. what?

thanks

Re: titling untitled folder

It depends on where the folder is.

If it is in your home area of your own account you should be able to rename anything you want.

If it is in System, Library or Applications those folders are not owned by you as they are where the system has ownership. This is a security measure.

You should keep your own data files and make new folders in your own account area which is in Users/YourUsername/

If you are making new folders in your own account area and cannot rename those then that is a different problem and you should repair permissions and then try again.

Re: titling untitled folder

btw you repair permissions by going to finder-->Go menu-->Utilities, launch Disk Utility, click "repair permissions"

Thanks for clicking.

nothing is wrong with it, if you were still using os9 but you are using os10 so that's not going to work.

you can create a folder anywhere and rename it whatever you want. unless you want to name it beginning with a . that is reserved for the system.
