iPod Touch?
bump the screen size to 5 - 6 inches ... give me a folding keyboard (laptop style)... some sort of ethernet connectivity add-on ... bluetooth.. and some more apps (word, excel, ping & port sniff)
oh and the ability to save documents
and the touch would be a laptop replacement
It would be a laptop.
So, basically, you want a Macbook Air for $1000?

ehh I was just stating the things about the touch that keep me from completely replacing my laptop with it.
I love it as a PDA ... but a laptop replacement it isn't

Well it is as long as you only use your laptop as a complementary device and not as a supplementary or primary one.

The only only only concern I have is that there's no way to set it as target disk mode. Apart from that I'll definitely possibly maybe get one sooner or later...

My iPod Touch is serving me very well as a laptop replacement. In light of the cost of the Air, it seems like a bargain. It isn't perfect, but I have a feeling the SDK is going to bring some pretty amazing software to it. It certainly has revolutionized the computing experience for me. I love my Touch.

Has anyone tried the macbook air external superdrive with the latest macbook?
[edit]
And also the Aluminum iMac. Those have "high-power" USB ports to support the latest apple keyboard.

The only mac with the above spec USB ports currently is the Macbook Air. You'd have to rig up some ability to power the thing separately.

I'd buy one tomorrow if I had the Target Disk Mode capability - even though a MacBook would do it and do it for less ££.
I don't need an optical drive, and big hard drive, ethernet, lots of USB ports, but I do need the quirky flexibility of TDM!

If by "above spec" you mean "supplies more than standard" then you are wrong.
Apple has been adding "high-powered USB 2.0" ports to their [edit] new models [edit] since the aluminum iMac came out. So when in the developers notes for the MacBook air say only: "high-powered USB 2.0" and the macbook, macbook pro, imac aluminum say only: "high-powered USB 2.0" then that gets me wondering they might be the same "high-powered USB 2.0".
folks on the internet have confirmed that the drive doesn't work with their macs but they haven't specified if their mac has high-powered USB ports.

Re: Macbook Air Arrives: Did MacLife not get one?
While external optical drives have existed that rely on the USB port alone, the particular power demands of the Apple-made drive should prevent it being used elsewhere; the sole USB port has been boosted past its specifications to supply enough power to use the drive with just the data cable rather than a direct power connection, say contacts [familiar with the internal design of the system].
The drive does not include any way to connect it to AC power for use with standard USB ports found on other Macs and PCs. Indeed, Apple has listed the MacBook Air as the only compatible computer for use with the unit.
source
Above spec is a continuum (notice my use of the word "the"). I highly doubt Apple would not list the iMac if it was indeed compatible.

Re: Macbook Air Arrives: Did MacLife not get one?
I've read that article and the article that it cited already.
Apple is weird and keeps some stuff secret for no apparent reason.
reasons for not advertising:
all macs with high-powered USB ports already have Superdrives standard (except the lowest low end macbook) the high-powered USB ports are new as of the latest product revisions.
and not even all the products. apple would probably wait till every computer had high-powered usb ports (we're waiting on the mini. .. maybe the macpro. not sure about that one)
http://developer.apple.com/documentatio … TP30000519
See if you can find anything in the developers notes.
all i'm saying is that the people who say that they've tried haven't specified which version of the macs they were testing it on.

speaking of the air's accessories does any one know if the usb ethernet adapter made for it will work on other macs .. I have a friend that could really use it.

I was merely quoting to expound upon how this drive is indeed most likely only compatible with the Macbook Air at this time. See if you can find any mention of any computer that is not the macbook air being compatible (as you should know finding proof is on your assertion since Apple clearly states what the drive is compatible with).

Re: Macbook Air Arrives: Did MacLife not get one?
That is why I am here.
To ask if anyone (here or anywhere else) has tried it.
We won't know if it works until someone has tried it.
How is there even an argument about this?
I think you must not have read my posts thoroughly.
"Has anyone tried the macbook air external superdrive with the latest macbook?"
"...and the macbook, macbook pro, imac aluminum say only: "high-powered USB 2.0" then that gets me wondering they might be the same "high-powered USB 2.0".

"all i'm saying is that the people who say that they've tried haven't specified which version of the macs they were testing it on."
I have not asserted at any point that the drive WILL work on another computer.
the strongest word i've said has been "MIGHT"
Anyone have anything useful to contribute?

Re: Macbook Air Arrives: Did MacLife not get one?
Huh? It says right on the page that it isn't compatible with any mac except for the Macbook Air. I'm just trying to get the point across to you that it won't work without some sort of weirdo hack. Saying my posts aren't useful just because they give you the answer you don't want is silly. If you just want someone to come in and agree with you then wow.

Re: Macbook Air Arrives: Did MacLife not get one?
Just because Apple says that on their website does not mean that it is 100% true.
It is most likely correct but apple has said things that sometimes have not been 100% true.
I still think that you have not correctly interpreted my posts.
edited to add:
After thorough evaluation I've decided, based on what you have written, that you have not understood my posts. Sorry for confusing you.
I'm also just going to assume that you're angry because i've been a forum member for a month longer than you.
Just got off the phone with my brother who works at an applestore. they tried the superdrive on other computers and it didn't work.
I figured that based on the information in the developers notes it was worth a try.
Apple is weird sometimes.
If you must reply, please re-read the thread and don't write anything stupid or mean.

i agree with Volk's notion regarding .Mac. there is a ton of potential there, and if nothing else, there's not really been anything in the way of new, cool stuff with .Mac.

you could just use toast to burn disks remotely...
ok, for those who don't get it yet: them macbook air is not a desktop replacement, nor is it really a laptop replacement. it is more like a cross with an ipod touch and a macbook pro. apple kind of got it wrong, in that it should be more of a cross between an ipod touch and a macbook. (with a price that falls between them to boot.)

AT took theirs apart. Nice look inside, what makes it tick and all, lotsa pics...
Inside Apple's MacBook Air
We just got our MacBook Air and wasted no time, we've already taken it apart and answered a couple of...
...
The two big chips in the center of the board are the CPU and the GMCH (Graphics and Memory Controller Hub), the smaller chip is actually the CPU while the slightly larger chip is the GMCH.
As a reference, here's a standard 35mm x 35mm mobile Intel CPU compared to the new smaller package that's in the MacBook Air. Note that this isn't Merom based, but the package size is the same.
