help with purchased music
I am trying to cut pieces of music for skaters. We need sections of 1:40 and 2:10 min. etc. We need nice beginnings and endings at specific times. I purchased songs from itunes and am unable to bring them into any program where I can cut the music. All that music I bought from itunes is becoming a waste if I can not make use of it. Can any one tell me how to cut music purchased from itunes?

Re: help with purchased music
To use music for a comercial project you will need to obtain a license from the copyright owner.

Re: help with purchased music
it's not a commercial project, just for our own skating. It's done all the time.

Re: help with purchased music
It should be fine if you import it into iMovie '06 (not iMovie 7/iMovie '08). You should be able to cut it then. Purchased music will not, however, work with Garageband.

Download Audacity. It's a free audio editing program. Easy to use.
Alright, now, who wants to be transistorized?

Re: help with purchased music
What you are likely having problems with is the digital rights management (DRM) which is part of most of the downloaded music from the iTunes Store. DRM prevents other programs which can directly edit the music files from accessing them.
Your choices are to get DRM-free versions of those music tracks or re-record them. If the music is from EMI then you can upgrade some of your purchases through iTunes Store (it will be an additional 30 cents per track), but even in the EMI catalog not all of the music is available in DRM-free format. Alternately you could go to the Amazon MP3 Store (which has DRM-free recordings) and see if you can buy the tracks there.
To re-record your tracks, you can export the tracks to a CD-R in audio CD format, then re-import them into iTunes as if you were ripping the tunes off of that CD. These files will be DRM-free.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, That worked! I will be more careful in the future. I am unaware of what EMI is. In the future when purchasing songs where do I find the information as to whether the music is DRM-free? Thanks again.

EMI is one of the Major record labels along with MCA, Universal, & Sony BMG.
The DRM free songs on iTunes are the iTunes Plus selections. You can generally tell them apart because of the little + symbol next to the price.
