I am surprised to see Canada so low. I thought my room mates would certainly skew the figures in a significant way.

I stopped drinking January 8, 1991. Trust me, that more than offsets whatever your room-mates do.

Re: Beer consumption/capita/year by country.
That's disregarding the actual alcoholic beverage.
countries that drink more refined and potent drinks such as wine usually drink less overall.
granted, still doesn't explain why Japan is so high on the list with their 14.5% sake.
O hold on.
Germany is THIRD?
with their 35% Jägermeifter?
Austria is FIFTH with 80% STROH?!?

They might have 35% Jagermeister, but the majority of germans drink beer or wine, not jager.

I can't say that I'm surprised to see the Irish and Germans in the top 3.

But the Czech's are dominating, yet they don't seem to be particularly renowned for their drinking habits.

It would make sense that the countries with the highest pops would be lower on the list even if they have more drinkers than others. They'll also have more non drinkers. It's all about averages.

Okay, you do know that just because a country produces high-proof alcohol it doesn't mean that they drink it every time they drink alcohol, right? I mean, you do know that there are -other- reasons to drink, right?

Canada is so low because of Quebec. Look where France is in that ranking. Quebec is like a chunk of France culturally.

I think they're more renowned for people not caring about what they're renowned for.

I'm surprised the US isn't first in consumption considering how weak it's beer is.

Shouldn't you be more surprised by how HIGH the US is on that list considering how BAD its beer is?

Ever hear of Bohemia?
Lager was invented in the Czech city of Pilzn (where we get the word Pilsner)
Budweiser was named after the Germanized name of a Czech/Bohemian city -as was Michelob.
We spend many a sunday afternoon at a Bohemian beer Garden in the spring/summer/fall. (one of the coolest drinking establishments in the whole of NYC)
The Czechs drink beer at the exclusion of all other alcoholic drinks for the most part.
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.

The typical Bud/Miller, etc isn't all that weak at all as far as alcohol content (for a pilsner Helles style).
It's main weakness is flavor.
As for strong beers, the US Micros out now have some of the strongest beers in the world -and the trend in the US micros is for very strong, extremely hoppy beers (Double IPAs, Barleywines, Imperial Stouts, etc)

I know all about it. It's just a national pasttime for Canadians to bash American beer, cause you know, American beer is the only drink that's stronger when you piss it out after.
