Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

So I was in the Salvation Army store today and I there was an iMac apple macintosh computer there for 200 and it works fine..

So Already having a MacBook Pro that came with Mac OS X, I'm having some problems, because the format is completely different..

so my question is.. is there any way to put Mac OS X on this computer..
and if there is a way that I can do this would I be able to use the Installation disks that came with my MacBook Pro?

I need to upgrade the computer somehow to Mac OS X because I need to put programs on it such as the Adobe Creative Suite and Lightwave and Microsoft Office, and they all require OS X or higher..

Any help would be appreciated, I really need it..
If someone could get back to me that would be great..

Through AIM would be even better!
AIM- subdrewgans

Thanks!

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

The first thing is to determine the exact model of iMac.  Is it a gumdrop iMac, an iLamp or a newer flat panel ?

It would also help to know how much RAM and disk space there is.

Next, we have to find out if the "firmware" is up to date.  This is very important.   (brb)

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

An iMac with OS 9 is darned old.  Look in About this Mac and report your CPU speed, RAM, HDD size.

My guess is that the iMac will be useless for Adobe CS.

You will need to buy a retail copy of OS X, the MacBook Pro copy is specific to your laptop.  It will not have the drivers for the iMac's hardware.

The money spent to get an ancient iMac usable would be better spent on a used G5 (iMac or PowerMac).  You should get the OS on disk with each Mac you buy.

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

well.. under About This Computer it says
Built In Memory: 32MB
Virtual Memory: Off
Largest Unused Block: 13.7 MB
Mac OS: 18.1MB
and thats pretty much all it says in there..

How would I go about finding out the exact model
It's the ones that have the see through colored backs of the monitors.. if that helps.. Im sorry Im not too good with computer terminology.. and I havnt been working with macs for very long, but I love them..

Thanks for your help.. and I apologize if i seem computer illiterate.. ha

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

There should be a sticker under it that says the exact model.

I think those old iMacs are not good for Leopard (OS X 10.5), but it would work with Tiger (10.4),  if it had at least 512 MB ram, and a 700 Mhz or faster processor.

(deleted some paragraphs)

I recommend just keeping this Mac for email, word processor, vintage games and other basic internet usage.

Yes...

That's OLD for OS X. And forget about Adobe Creative Suite and Lightwave.

Sorry.

Another option is put linux on it and use it as some sort of server.

http://www.mklinux.org/

Ubuntu used to have a version for the mac to download, but I can't find it.  I think they still have cd  you can get from them.

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

Sounds like one of the first models. Definitely needs a RAM upgrade, even for Linux. At least 128MB. Yellow Dog Linux works well too.

I'd forget about Photoshop unless it's an older version.

266 MHz? I have the poster - those were the first models that came in multuiple colors... er... flavors.

Don't even try OS X. It'll run, but in a "well, okay, I got it to work... now I'll go back to OS 9" kind of way.

^^more info that you probably wanted to know about your computer.^^

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

The listed retail value of the iMac you bought is about $20 so you paid 10 times what it is worth.

You should return it and get your money back if you still can as it cannot do what you want anyway. Also the highest OS that machine will run is Panther 10.3.9 not Tiger and it will still be slow as hell just doing basic email etc.

In the future before you buy a used Mac check here, just click on the type and then select the model and at the bottom of the product spec section will be the suggested retail.

For a better used Mac try craigslist in your area. For $200 you should be able to get a G4 that will run Tiger, CS and Lightwave just fine but if you want to run Leopard you will need to pay more for a capable machine.

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

I run into those late '90s/early 2000 G3 iMacs all the time. They usually range $35 - $65 at most in thrift stores. $200 is way over-priced. Look at the date and specs before you buy any computer equipment. I'd suggest looking it up online first before throwing your money away. A dead give-away is the fact that it has System 9, 266 CPU and 32  RAM. No, you're not going to run OS X on it, and even if you threw more money into it with upgrades to do so, is it worth it?

Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

This is probably better advice.

Although "return policy" is kind of a foreign language in most thrift stores.

32 MBs, even.

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

I know! You could print out all the advice you got from this forum, bring it back to the store and tell the manager that they way-over-priced the iMac according to all the Mac experts here (check e-bay too), look into their eyes, shed a tear and say you really need the money back for your over-due rent or rare-disease operation, and try getting at least $150 back.

Thrift store people are usually clueless about how to price computer equipment to begin with, so you've got to appeal to their sense of decency. This may may not work in the end however -- a no return policy means no returns, dammit!. A bitter pill to swallow, I know, but at least you'll have gained wisdom for the future by trying.

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

well it was bought for me as a gift.. so I would feel bad for returning it.. I basically wanted a Desktop Mac and I knew when I got it that it would be wishful thinking to get it to work the way I wanted it to, but like someone said I will probably use it for Vintage games and to store some documentation on it.

Is there any way that I could connect my MacBook Pro to the monitor to use it basically as a desktop.

I could go out and get a docking system, but since I already have this I am wondering if there is any way to do this.. I'm already using the keyboard with my MacBook Pro because I'm not a big fan of Laptop Keyboards.

Sorry, the iMac isn't set-up the same way a regular monitor is – there is no monitor connection port out on the iMac.

Just get a used CRT monitor as an external diplay, don't need to spend a lot; you can probably get one for free; people just toss them out these days. Check craigslist.org under free. Check first to see what kind of external display port is on the Macbook. It's either DVI or VGA.

The main point to learn is never trust the way thrift store people price computers! It's a $50 computer (at best) man.
