The first thing is to determine the exact model of iMac.  Is it a gumdrop iMac, an iLamp or a newer flat panel ?

It would also help to know how much RAM and disk space there is. 

Next, we have to find out if the "firmware" is up to date.  This is very important.   (brb)

well.. under About This Computer it says
Built In Memory: 32MB
Virtual Memory: Off
Largest Unused Block: 13.7 MB
Mac OS: 18.1MB
and thats pretty much all it says in there..

How would I go about finding out the exact model
It's the ones that have the see through colored backs of the monitors.. if that helps.. Im sorry Im not too good with computer terminology.. and I havnt been working with macs for very long, but I love them..

Another option is put linux on it and use it as some sort of server.

Ubuntu used to have a version for the mac to download, but I can't find it.  I think they still have cd  you can get from them.

266 MHz? I have the poster - those were the first models that came in multuiple colors... er... flavors.

Don't even try OS X. It'll run, but in a "well, okay, I got it to work... now I'll go back to OS 9" kind of way.

I run into those late '90s/early 2000 G3 iMacs all the time. They usually range $35 - $65 at most in thrift stores. $200 is way over-priced. Look at the date and specs before you buy any computer equipment. I'd suggest looking it up online first before throwing your money away. A dead give-away is the fact that it has System 9, 266 CPU and 32  RAM. No, you're not going to run OS X on it, and even if you threw more money into it with upgrades to do so, is it worth it?

32 MBs, even.

I know! You could print out all the advice you got from this forum, bring it back to the store and tell the manager that they way-over-priced the iMac according to all the Mac experts here (check e-bay too), look into their eyes, shed a tear and say you really need the money back for your over-due rent or rare-disease operation, and try getting at least $150 back.

Thrift store people are usually clueless about how to price computer equipment to begin with, so you've got to appeal to their sense of decency. This may may not work in the end however -- a no return policy means no returns, dammit!. A bitter pill to swallow, I know, but at least you'll have gained wisdom for the future by trying.

Sorry, the iMac isn't set-up the same way a regular monitor is – there is no monitor connection port out on the iMac.

Just get a used CRT monitor as an external diplay, don't need to spend a lot; you can probably get one for free; people just toss them out these days. Check craigslist.org under free. Check first to see what kind of external display port is on the Macbook. It's either DVI or VGA.
