Sorry, the iMac isn't set-up the same way a regular monitor is – there is no monitor connection port out on the iMac.

Just get a used CRT monitor as an external diplay, don't need to spend a lot; you can probably get one for free; people just toss them out these days. Check craigslist.org under free. Check first to see what kind of external display port is on the Macbook. It's either DVI or VGA.

I'm actually pretty certain that there is a monitor in on the iMac's display.
It's a moot point anyway since it is DB15, so in addition to the DVI-VGA you'd need a VGA-DB15 and You'd have to take the bottom plastic plate off of the iMac to get to it AND the imac would make a bulky, poopy external monitor with it's 13.8" viewable 1024X786 resolution.

It can still useful though.
The computer will take up to a 128GB HD and RAM might still be cheap from macsales.com.

No, there is not. I've taken apart more 233-333MHz iMacs than I care to recount.

Not compared to a MacBook.

According to MacTracker (donationware) only the  "flavored" iMacs that were 400 MHz or faster had video out for mirroring only.

Since it was a gift donate it back to the same place it came from and get them to write you a receipt for $200.

Use that as a tax write off.

Go get another computer.

confused

so if there's no video in on the iMacs CRT then how does it get a video signal from the motherboard?

If there's no video out on the logic board then where does the display get it's video signal from?

While you happen to be right about the iMac revs. A-D, this isn't (necessarily) true for all iMacs, or any other computer with a built in screen (like PowerBooks).

well, not without some serious hardware hacking, anyway. The video connector inside the iMac doesn't directly connect to the CRT, there is extensive circuitry in between.

Re: Just bought an iMac that has OS 9 and I need help

sorry

"The iMac" is referring to the iMac in question, not all iMacs.  I could have phrased it better.  I was going for shorter, simpler sentences.

No offense but this whole thread (and all threads) would be about half the size if people actually read all of it before replying.  I could be wrong about your post but not about a lot of the others.
