Triumph of the Evil Liberals

As of today both Tom DeLay's old seat and Dennis Hastert's are now now controlled by Democrats.  Just an hour or so ago, Bill Foster was declared the winner in Hastert's Illinois District 14, always previously safely Republican like Delay's, by a margin of 52-48

Oh, and the GOP spent one-fifth of their NRCC cash-in-hand (of which they ain't got much these days) losing it.

Anyway, that can't feel good for the GOP heading towards November.

Re: Triumph of the Evil Liberals

Republican donors aren't giving anything to House Republicans this cycle. A few months ago the NRCC was completely broke.

There's no filibuster in the House, and there's very little chance they'll be able to regain the majority anytime soon, so it's a terrible investment.

They're going to throw all their money behind McCain and competitive Senate races, to make sure they have at least 40+ seats there.

Re: Triumph of the Evil Liberals

They need to lose a lot more seats if the Dems have any prayer of getting things done in the next Congress. The GOP is too effective in opposition. They need the sixty votes necessary to invoke cloture in the Senate.

Yeah. But Dems shouldn't waste too much money and time on the House. The current majority is big enough.

The Senate map is very good for Democrats this cycle, so they could conceivably get 60 seats. Passing anything substantive will require damn well near that many seats, (despite Obama's dreams of bringing Democrats and Republicans together).

This Foster guy was running against Oberweis, a 4 time loser in the last few years.
Oberweis is a jerk so I wouldn't try and put too much into this one.
(although I think the results will be similar in other elections for the reasons mentioned)

context seems somewhat lacking, but i tend to think all politicians are scummy, even the bastards we get to vote for.

I'm not hopeful. Democrats now have enough seats to stop any legislature from passing (failing to invoke cloture) and they've still given Bush nearly everything he's asked for. I don't see how sixty seats changes it all that much.

60 seats makes it filibuster-proof.

67 means they can override a veto.

With 40+ they can filibuster anything they disagree with—and actively campaigned against. They have the numbers, but they lack the will.

They've apparently decided that doing stupid smurf is better than appearing to do nothing at all.
