Issues found with US SSB Brawl
Brawl Doesn't Work With Some Wii
Looks like Super Smash Bros Brawl is having some problems working on a few Wii out there. We've only received a handful of complaints about this here at Kotaku, but it's a big enough problem that Nintendo already has a site set up to deal with the problem in North America.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialized cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. (Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system.)

Re: Issues found with US SSB Brawl
i'm curious about this. i haven't had my Wii crap out, but it sounds like a freaking freight train chugging away when its reading the disc. mind you, i've not seen any stuttering in the cut scenes, but i've NEVER heard the Wii work so hard at reading a disc as it does when i'm playing SSBB.
suck it, trebek.

Wi supports DVD-DL?
I didn't know that.
I wonder when the DVD player capability will come.
Tomorrow I might get SSBB, 'cause I didn't know it was out until the SSBB codes thread went up, but my Wii has been essentially problem-free, except for twice since I got it (one was today) it has seized up[ completely, requiring unplugging to reset, as the button doesn't work.

Yeah, SSB Brawl is a huge game. Have you seen how many blocks it takes on your Wii's memory?

...? Why would you think it didn't have the ability to read dual-layer DVD's? Hell, the PS2 back in 2000 could read DL DVD's. Sometimes. Compatibility did get better with time. I actually think it'd be impossible to find a DVD-ROM nowadays that didn't support DL DVD's...
Surprising how this is a problem though...

SSBB has worked fine on my wii.
Of course, I'm on my 3rd console....

Re: Issues found with US SSB Brawl
Bratboy, what issues did you have happen with your Wii's that you them replaced? Mine acted a little funny two weeks ago on the Wii Sports game. I put the disc in and it errored out and told me to restart. It happened 2 or 3 times in a row before it finally read the disc. I cleaned the disc after the first time it happened, and when it finally worked, all the games loaded really slowly. Golf took close to a minute to load between each hole.
Now, last weekend it played great, no problems at all. I'm curious if that is an indication of things to come.

Re: Issues found with US SSB Brawl
I got mine on launch day and it's never had a single problem. I have two friends who have bought wii's in the last 5 months or so, and those have errored out a couple times randomly.
Just bought SSB, going to fire it up right now and see if I'm lucky.

Ok, just played it. Got the disc error, sprayed compressed air into my wii's disc slot, and it works flawlessly now.
When it errored out, it was loud and clanky, but now it's smooth as silk. Quiet as any other game. Maybe you could try compressed air?

3 days of playing, and not a single issue after using 3 bursts of compressed air. Jolly!

Re: Issues found with US SSB Brawl
My Wii is kept in a nice, clean, smoke and (relatively) dust free room, and I haven't had a problem with Brawl or any other game.
Though, I'm curious how it'll do on my friend's Wii, as his parents are chain smokers, and he's not exactly an immaculate housekeeper.

Re: Issues found with US SSB Brawl
My friend's wii has never been able to connect online. At first we thought it was the infamous incompatible router, but after switching routers, it's the wii itself. Unfortunately it's out of warrany, but we could probably get it fixed still by nintendo. But my friend, for some reason, doesn't care about playing it online.

Well, the irony is that the only thing that can damage a Nintendo product is another Nintendo product.
And my Wii/Brawl is doing fine.

My first wii went bad in a weird way....I started to see flashing white dots and lines in polygon images. Apparently something was wrong with the graphics card or board or something.
The second wii simply wouldn't start up or do anything.

my issue is not being able to play online during normal after-business hours.
11pm to 5pm the next day are fine, but anything between 5pm and 10pm are just smurf. and connectivity with friends has just been weird to say the least.

Re: Issues found with US SSB Brawl
Didn't you know? Nintendo is the world's leading manufacturer of tiny airborne skin, hair, and fabric particles.
Anyways, the online issues are known. Apparently Nintendo's servers have been swamped with a higher than anticipated amount of traffic for Brawl, making it difficult to play games with people not on your friends list. They are working on it, and it should be solved momentarily as they get more servers and such in place.

Re: Issues found with US SSB Brawl
Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released last Sunday, and will likely be one of Nintendo’s biggest Wii titles for 2008. Several of those who purchased the game found that their Wii consoles had issues reading the disc, preventing it from running.
According to the Boston Herald, second-hand cigarette smoke could be one of the culprits for giving the Wii trouble in reading the disc. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the biggest Wii game yet, and requires dual-layer DVD media in order to contain all the data. The slightest bit of smoke residue on the optical pickup inside the Wii could be enough to stop the console from reading the dual-layer disc.
...
The idea of preventing smoke inhalation by a console’s cooling system may not be entirely crazy. A Japanese peripherals maker has developed a dust and smoke filter accessory for the PlayStation 3 – though no accessory exists yet for the Wii.

Not unlikely it's a combination of factors skewing badly, becoming a worst-case scenario for those affected.

i read about that, but also read the danger of it. something about potential condensation, and no way in HELL i'm voiding my warranty (i think) to make a game disc sound quieter.
its still playing nicely, with the "chunking" sound only audible in odd spaces.

Re: Issues found with US SSB Brawl
Yes, that can happen. The pressure drop makes the air very cold and can cause condensation. That's not anything you'd want... it's pretty iffy. It has worked for some, but there are hazards.

Re: Issues found with US SSB Brawl
If the wii is not plugged in and you give it time to dry off, a little bit of condensation is not going to hurt it.

Those cans sometimes spray a mist of sorts, but usually only if you shake the can before spraying, or tilting it while spraying. Otherwise, you're golden. Either way tho...sounds like you're fine without it.
