Re: XP SP3 set for April

Yah, it's back.

Well happy days are ahead, as both Vista SP1 and XP SP3 are back in action.  The packs went live on Tuesday.  The XP SP3 is available here.  Microsoft solved the MSD RMS issue with a hotfix, which can be had here.  Microsoft suggests you install this hotfix before installing XP SP3 to avoid issues.

The third service pack weighs in at 316 MB, for those interested.  Over 1,100 hotfixes/patches are included in the pack.  Also included are new features, among which are the handy Network Access Protection and Black Hole Router Detection.

Most will agree that while the delay of XP SP3 might be slightly embarrassing for Microsoft, the company did a remarkably good job of fixing the problem quickly and getting the packs back online.  The whole process only took a week, lying to rest customer fears caused by Microsoft failing to disclose when the packs would be available again.

Windows Update is also back to automatically distributing the pack once again.  Users who disabled the feature can re-enable it to get the pack automatically without any effort.

Re: XP SP3 set for April

I got an autochk not found and reboot loop after installing sp3. Only happens in parallels, but not when in boot camp. Weird.

Anyone else? anyone know how to fix this?

Re: XP SP3 set for April

I had a seriously hard time installing SP3 on my boot camp partition.  Every time I tried, I got the same error:

There is not enough disk space on C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ to install Service Pack 3 Setup requires an additional 4 megabytes of free space or if you also want to archive the files for uninstallation,Setup requires 4 additional megabytes of free space. Free additional space on your hard disk and then try again.

I have gigs free.

Couldn't get it running until someone pointed out this article to me, which says:

This happens because iMac uses EFI file format which Windows XP does not support. To workaround this problem, add a registry key as follows:

    1. Click Start - Run - Type “regedit” and press enter.

    2. Navigate to

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
        \Software
             \Microsoft
                  \Windows
                      \CurrentVersion
                           \Setup

    3. In the right pane, Right-click and select New - String value

    4. Name it as “BootDir” and set its value to “C:\”

Worked like a charm; it installed without another hitch.

Now I can't figure out what the heck has changed.  Not much, it would seem.

Windows is happy with so little.

Re: XP SP3 set for April

It has to do with the way Boot Camp, OS X and EFI do the partition map.

Windows is looking in the wrong place for some rather important files.

If XP was already fully updated, than mostly the few new features, and they mostly operate behind the scenes. I can't tell I have the Black Hole Router Detection thingie* on the box most of the time either.

Re: XP SP3 set for April

Why do I keep getting pinged by MS to upload more updates? It seems like every 3 to 5 days it has another update for me to upload.
