Inhouse Xserve datacenter?
I've been involved with some people that would like an in-house small-scale data center. I'm thinking an Xserve solution would be easy to manage and not bad on the budget. I can always do the small upgrades myself, that's no issue, and I can imagine that Apple's corporate support will be good later on. An Xserve specced to my likes is a cool $4k, plus money for a raid system. Does Apple still make their 4u raid racks? I could not find anything but support forums for them.
Is this a good idea, or am I overkilling it a little bit?
Thanks,
-Tim

Given the fact that when you go to configure an xserve it isn't an option and in its place is:
For massive storage needs, connect a Promise VTrak E-Class Fiber Channel RAID subsystem to your Xserve. The VTrak E-Class provides high performance and high availability through 4Gb Fiber Channel and dual active/active controllers. An Apple Fibre Channel card for connectivity is required
so i am going to have to say no.
