God doesn't tip

I was out eating with my girlfriend a few days ago and couldn't help but notice that there were members of a ministry behind us.  I never pay that much attention to other people in a restaurant, but the proximity and volume of their voices gave me no choice in picking up a few things that were said.  Any who, long story short, one of the guys said, "Who's leaving the tip?"  To which the older man in the group replied, "Oh, we don't leave tips.  We leave a blessing."  WTF?  I'm sure that will help the waitress pay her bills.  I would be insulted.

I would be insulted too.  One would think they'd be prone to being generous.

There's a good possibility that what you heard was a joke.
Or he could have been cheap.

Please don't assume he is representative of Christians or ministers in general.

Re: God doesn't tip

The Waiter Rant blog had a post about people leaving tracts for waiters instead of a tip, sometimes a blessing written on a card.

Any reason why? A lot of waiters/waitresses, including my brother, make only several dollars per hour (my brother started at $2something). They make they're living through tips.

I'm still left with the feeling that the tip wouldn't have been very large.

Re: God doesn't tip

This happens more than you think. We have a group of regulars who come in every  Sunday after service and they run you ragged. If your lucky they leave 8%, oh and usually one of those little comic type books that basically say if I don't become a Christian I am doomed to eternal damnation.

Re: God doesn't tip

Tips are a very important part of a waiter or waitresses income.  If the service was good and you don't leave a tip you're an smurf.  Plain and simple.

Re: God doesn't tip

Yeah, you could be right, but I think it's a little unfair to assume that they didn't leave a tip, and if they did, it was small.

If you know for a fact someone's being cheap or not leaving a tip at all, then I'd be pissed.

Re: God doesn't tip

Guess mudo shouldn't have posted without first tracking down the waiter and verifying the tip.

I generally tip very well, but if you look around online, waiters/waitresses seem to feel anything less than 30% is you being an smurf. That belief to me seems excessive.

I mainly tip though out of fear that my food will be spit in next time around, and not being white, they're biased against my tipping habits to being with.

I thought the accepted level was 15% (I usually go 20% myself, the math is easier).

Re: God doesn't tip

Tipping is expected when you eat out its something 98 percent of us expect to do eating anyplace that has a wait staff if you dont tip then you should not eat anywhere you would be expected to do so. Your not special your not exempt. I have seen people leave those blessing type deals and on two occasions as I was exiting I dropped  a couple bucks on the table and left the blessing the original person had intended as a "tip". I just hate to see people get screwed I have never worked in a job were I ever received tips. So I have no special bias or past experience's I just think its wrong.

Same.

Working at a bar I depend on tips also. It annoys me when I make two relatively intensive drinks and get no tip. I can only imagine what serving a whole family for a smurfy tip is like.

Re: God doesn't tip

I suspect the people leaving tracts aren't doing it in place of a tip - they are just cheap people who happen to also be people who leave tracts everywhere.

Re: God doesn't tip

Just leaving tracts is actually a very ineffective way of proselytizing - it occasionally works, but really, just leaving tracts is of benefit to the weak - they feel like they are doing something without actually doing something.

Friend to Friend evangelism is much more effective.
Talking to someone you don't know is much more effective.
Helping people in need is much more effective.

I have been cut by God. I was attempting to buy a book, was clearly at the register before anyone, and this guy in a clerical clothes comes up and blatantly cut me.
