New iMac vs. Mac Pro buying decision

Option 1:   wait for new iMac top of the line

Option 2:   buy new iMac 24" now  for $ 2249

Option 3:  This Mac Pro setup for $ 2500 at most.   Probably $ 2300.

2 dual core 2.66 GHz Intel Xeon Processors = 4 total cores!
ATI Radeon X1900 512MB Video Card, supports dual displays
4GB of RAM
500GB of HardDrive Space
2 16x SuperDrives (Burns DVDs and CDs)   That's right -- Two superdrives
Wi-Fi card
Windows Vista license included

This question is for another person --- I just did the posting.

I'm leaning toward option 3, even if the new iMac has the same CPU has this Mac Pro.

Assume that Applecare will be purchased separately.

I say go for option 3 as well.  The Mac Pro is upgradeable and wicked fast.

Re: New iMac vs. Mac Pro buying decision

if it matters, I am planning on buying a Mac soon. my decision comes down to Usage. the ability to rip Blue ray movies down to Apple TV format is a driving factor. once I have the cash in hand my choice may be limited to a mac pro.

have your friend list what he needs, including backup, storage and program usage and IMO factor in Total cost of ownership. that usually makes for a good tiebreaker.

Re: New iMac vs. Mac Pro buying decision

Alright i just plugged her in. Shes fast from my G5 iMac i have! But i have a question, every once in awhile i can hear it like loading. Does anyone else hear that on there Mac Pro? i hear this on my old machines at work when we boot them up. Its not like its a bad sound, it just sounds like it processing stuff but i never used to hear it on my imac, is that just how mac pros are??

Shhhh, don't let it worry you. Macs often have moving parts. The moving parts sometimes makes noises.

If they should suddenly be grinding or clunking noises, then you should panic.

As long as it doesn't sound like a computer in the movies (floppy drive sounds!).
