Re: so why did apple discontinue the isight?

I don't usually take offense to anything, let alone cursing, but for some reason I find the original poster's "censor dodging" and lack of capital letters offensive. Especially from someone who isn't new to the forum.

Re: so why did apple discontinue the isight?

I think Apple discontinued the iSight specifically to piss off NSX. tongue

I use a cheapo Logitech USB Webcam. $25 or so. Works with iChat AV, mic works, I use a 'real' camcorder for anything else. It's nice to see family long distance, and they like seeing me. Otherwise, I'm not too in love with taking pictures of myself, so...

Re: so why did apple discontinue the isight?

I think we all understand your basic point, NSX. There may still a market for the iSight. I honestly don't think that there was much of a market to begin with, but they did sell for a while there. What is hard to understand (besides "u" and "wot" confused) is your hatred for USB. Seriously, there's nothing wrong with it. I too will always prefer Firewire for moving data, but when it comes to webcams, USB 2 has more than enough bandwidth to match a firewire iSight and they can be had for far less $$. Go ahead and be upset that Apple stopped making the solution you want, we won't disagree with you, but if you're going to rule out every other perfectly equal (but not Apple) solution we present and tell us we're not being helpful...well....good luck with that.

And please just type your swears and so the censor can do it's job for those who can't handle that smurf.

Re: so why did apple discontinue the isight?

apple stopped making and selling the isight for the same reason anyone stops making and selling a product. IT WASN'T MAKING THEM MONEY! crying about it now isn't going to bring it back. neither will crying bring back the iPod HiFi, the MessagePad (newton), the Cube or any other discontinued apple products.

new mac users generally couldn't give two smurfs about the name brand of their web cam. if it works they are happy. as a matter of opinion it would probably make them even happier to see that the mac can work with all sorts of name brand products and not just the ones that apple makes. by showing a new user how effortless it is to connect a web cam, even a none apple brand web cam they will be more in love with their computer because "it just works"

It's a good thing NSX wasn't around for the Quicktake fiasco back in 94 to 97 lol

I would give that a shot if I was in the market for a new webcam.

Actually, that probably shows wisdom on your part.

(and fwiw, the thought of me standing in front of a webcam sans culottes makes me queasy too. I'm very definitely not the exhibitionist type.)

I think the isight was discontinued because Apple has problems with vision.

Re: so why did apple discontinue the isight?

I can't believe I'm about to ask about a M$ product, here goes.

Does anyone own one of these X-Box 360 Live cameras and are using it with OS 10.3.9?

As stated probably elsewhere I own a iBook G4. I've read a couple of Amazon reviews about the X-Box 360 Live where Mac owners said it worked with Tiger and Leopard. I haven't seen anything about the web cam working with Panther.

Eventually I'll either upgrade this laptop so I can run Leopard or buy a new Mac, rendering the need for an external web cam obsolete.

Any help is appreciated.

Although its not the response your looking for... i have used my vision cam on Tiger and Leopard and it worked flawlessly. I dont have any x.3 discs to try it on hmm
