I'm curious:
I like the Microsoft LifeCam's. Do those work without software in Leopard? They have the NX series which clips on top of a laptop, comes in a little carry bag and produces pretty good pics and videos.

To the OP: If you get an official Apple answer as to why the iSight was discontinued, you'd be the first. In other words, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
As for alternatives, any USB VC (video conferencing) qualified cam should work. You can also use any DV or Digital8 camcorder that uses FireWire, if you plug it in, remove the tape, and use it in 'camera' mode.
There's one webcam in particular that pretty much swipes the iSight's design (a bit uglier, but similar style), although it too is a USB cam.
