Kids!

Just smurfing shoot me. Seriously, if I see one more kid spell "to" as "2" I'm going to gouge my eyes out!

Background: I administer a forum for a non-profit education organization (for kids of well-to-do parents).  Over the past few years I've noticed the younger students typing things spelt with numbers and incorrectly and it's not even l33t (doubt they even know what that is, or if they do they don't know how to use it for ironic effect).

Like today, I came across this gem:

"Do u hav 2 hav a B average in order 2 go 2 the forum?"

Princess, grade aside, you do need to know how to spell correctly.  Or in other words, "u do hav 2 kno how 2 spel rite."

I do remember reading a few papers or articles about how kids these days use this txt style of spelling more and more frequently, even to the point of writing essays with it, at least until their paper marked down by the teacher for looking like a monkey typed it out.

Re: Kids!

When I first started foruming around 6 years ago I was only 12, I had to learn from some very informative trolls that it was not the same as IM chat, and also that an 18 year old who spent his/her time on forums was not automatically a huge loser.

Bt thn agn i wuz nvr dis bad at spelin bcuz all i wud do wuz type out my 2s

Re: Kids!

Most teens I have talked don't care about it.

They do their texting in it, they do their homework in it.

I've asked them if they think it will affect them in college or getting a job. If they continue this behavior I know I wouldn't hire them.

Hopefully they grow out of it, like a snake shedding its skin.

My BIL is a high school English teacher and has seen plenty of this - including essays and homework done in txt.

Wonderful!  I look forward to one day being handed a job application filled out that way.  I will throw it in the trash.

It would be gratifying to be able to do it in front of the offender's eyes.

Years ago, I did a presentation in one of my linguistics classes about how this sort of thing would become more and more common.  There were a couple of people who just absolutely refused to believe me.  And now, here we are!

Re: Kids!

I shall cast derision, confusion, and miscomprehension amongst you by the simple expedient of writing in full, complex sentences, using large multi-syllabic words of significant meaning.

Re: Kids!

When I was in kindergarten, we had a private test to determine class placement.  The teacher asked me "Please write 1 to 10 on the paper"

"One to Ten"

This was 1987, so I guess things worked backwards then.

Re: Kids!

I am out of the "text" loop as I can't afford it smile
Parents who let their kids have cell phones to text anyone they want as much as they want is as much to blame as any teacher who would accept anything written in this new type of spelling.

It can also be due to laziness, or the inability to type.

I have 2 (two) friends who home school their kids.  One family has two girls going through the teenage phase now, but they don't care about cell phones.  They can speak properly, and spell correctly.  The other family has one boy just now hitting his teens and knows the cell phone is for mom and dad only.  If he wants to talk to his friends he has to do it the old fashioned way.  The phone.

Re: Kids!

I use full words in text messages too. Although, when i occasionally get lazy, i text with shortcuts too. I think there's nothing wrong with it, as long as you know when and when not to use it.
