Help with PowerBook & External Monitor

Hi all.  I take my PowerBook G4 to work everyday and have just recently been trying to connect it to a larger monitor via DVI to VGA adapter.  I can't seem to get it configured correctly.

I can detect the monitor just fine and when mirroring is turned off, the resolution displays fully.  When I turn mirroring on, the monitor flicks a few times, then shows the mirrored display, except it only takes up a small fraction of the monitor's real estate.  I have tried every one of the monitor's resolutions, and none of them will get it to full display.

Additionally, in the past, the only way I could get it to full mirror display was to wake the PB, plug in the monitor, detect displays, close the PB and put back to sleep, then rewake the PB with a mouse or keyboard while it's still shut.  Not only am I not comfortable with waking and putting the thing to sleep so rapidly and frequently, I have to think there is an easier method of getting full display.  Any input?  Thanks.

That's most probably because the monitor at work has a higher resolution that the PB. (for mirroring, the external resolution will have to be the same as the PB screen, else it won't be mirroring)

So to get the full estate, the setting should be on the monitor, wheither it should display pixel for pixel, or stretch the picture.
