FOILED!
i did say "what would YOU do?" though. it's not like i necessarily get to keep them. some customers just need a large amount of top-cases replaced all at once. like at the end of a school year. Hypothetically speaking.
Kids can be hard on their school-supplied laptops. Or maybe they just neglected to clean their greasy little fingers.

I'd take one and put it on my Macbook because Apple wouldn't replace my grimy one.

If apple doesn't fix a problem, take it to an apple specialist. (well don't "Check It In" you might get charged a diagnostic fee if it's not covered under applecare/extended warranty/recall) but you can always take it in and ask.

Well, Apple would fix it but not without charging me (out of warranty). I understand they did fix some free of charge. I did talk to a specialist store but they wanted even more than Apple.

Sad. I guess you have more of an honest store than I'm used to. I see lots of them go into the grey area to make repairs happen since they get reimbursed from apple.
Have you tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser?

I'd start a cult where to gain more power within the order, you must rent the holy artifact. There are only 1000 holy artifacts. Every time one is rented, to the highest bidder, that money goes to the cult. You must either bid higher to retain your artifact or relinquish your artifact to the more holy highest bidder.
Everyone wins!
