USB 3.0 forking

And Apple basically uses Intel, so...

WELL, IT LOOKS like you and I are going to be in for a world of incompatibility and pain in the coming year, USB3.0 is forking. Intel is playing power games again, the industry is going around it, and we all lose.

Word has come to us that most of the industry is not going to wait for Intel, and is forming their own consortium to do it themselves. The two standards won't be compatible of course and both will be called USB3.0, so when you buy a PC or a device, they won't necessarily work together. If you remember the broken mess that was USB1.0, you have a fair idea of what is in store.

...

In the end, we all lose, and USB3.0 is a lost cause. Based on what is coming, hold off and wait for USB3.1. µ

damn it.  Well actually, the general population probably won't care about USB 3.0 for the foreseeable future, so I think the problems might be over before it'll affect me.

btw, I like forks; especially 2^n forks.

Re: USB 3.0 forking

Do we even need another USB format?  Other than marketing dickheads, is there anyone who thinks USB2 (or USB, as I call it) is really that bad?  You plug in a printer, iPod, flash drive, and it's about as fast as can be expected.

The only thing wrong with USB is that it is slow and a monstrous CPU hog.

Oh, ya...and buggy too, cant forget that.

Other than that its just smurfing perfect.

Re: USB 3.0 forking

None of those would be correctable by 3.0 or 3.1.

Though there is a good bit of good with that big hunk of badness.

Re: USB 3.0 forking

I understood the forking/branching lines aspect to be representative of the forking/branching nature of a USB setup nut am not totally sure of the symbolism of the various shape at the end of each line. I'm guessing the differences between the shapes would be indicative over being able to use it for many different things.

Apple's probably in a good position right now. Sit back and wait for the infighting to die down. The USB2 and FW400 combo of the Macs will hold strong in a USB3 market.

Wouldn't that also hold true for most of the computers on the market right now as well?

Find me a laptop with a full size FireWire port or a common Dell with a FireWire port. (I'm not talking models we would buy, ones that most people buy)

Heh, a lot of people don't even buy digital camcorders with Firewire anymore.

Thneeds, all of them. Just wish we could figure out who the Once-ler is.

Simple market dynamics. When only a small percentage of computers have FW using USB is really the only option for a consumer level camera.
I suppose they could do like they used to do and ship the camcorder with a FireWire card. I remember back in the day when some scanners came bundled with a scsi card.

Re: USB 3.0 forking

I had a Firewire camera back in 2000. Mini DV, only did firewire. Man, worth every penny. Cost me $1000. Now you can't replace it for $1500.

My sister's Dell has firewire. My sister is not tech savvy and bought a computer with price first, features 2nd mentality. That tells me its probably more common than we think.

I doubt that it's 6 pin. Then again, saw a Dell display with composite in the other day, that was a pleasant surprise.

It's not at all uncommon, tho. Dell's displays typically have a wide variety of inputs.

Re: USB 3.0 forking

So, what does this mean? Forking? And do we really need it? Except for speed I guess. I mean I wouldn't mind having a much faster HD, but it wouldn't matter since I have 4 external USB HD's. (One 1TB that's literally brand new.) I'd have to replace them all. So really, 3.0 wouldn't matter to me at all in the slightest for at least 4 years when I decide to replace them all.

Re: USB 3.0 forking

Forking = Intel goes one way, the industry peripherals consortium goes another. Devices to one's spec aren't compatible with the other's but are branded alike. Incompatibility and confusion reign.

Will USB 3.0 Device X work with your Intel-spec Mac? Who can tell? Caveat emptor.

God, you mean like the whole High Definition movie fiasco? And we all see how well that turned out.

When will technology companies freaking learn? STANDARDS FOR GODS SAKE. ONE STANDARD TO RULE THEM ALL!!
