External monitor with a CRT tray loading iMac
Hi, I've a Rev c CRT tray-loading G3 iMac that has a failing monitor. So I've connected an external monitor after removing the back end of the iMac's case and disconnecting the internal monitor - just like here: <http://www.tuaw.com/2006/02/05/imac-meet-display/>. However the monitor I had on hand is just an old Apple Multiple Scan 15av which is not so great.
So I want to buy an LCD screen to use instead, but I need to know what resolutions the iMac's Rage Pro can support. I know it can do far more than it can with only the internal monitor, but damned if I can find a list of supported resolutions anywhere :-(
So - anyone know? And advice on what LCD to buy would be appreciated :-)
TIA,

Re: External monitor with a CRT tray loading iMac
I ran mine at 1152x864 no problem - I'd imagine you'd be okay with a 1280x960/1024 as well, but I wouldn't go larger - you'd probably start dropping color information at that point. Also, widescreen would probably confuse it.
I have no advice on which LCD to get, except the rather generic advice to go to a showroom or two to see them in action, then buy the model you want for 20% less online.

Re: External monitor with a CRT tray loading iMac
dvpierce - thanks very much for the info :-) I was thinking the upper limit was 1024x768 and that would have restricted me to a 15" LCD. But with 1152x864 also supported that gives me greater options :-) *browses 17" LCDs*
I'm guessing - from my limited experience - that every smaller LCD will also support 640x480 and 800x600? - these being required for some games.
Maybe a decent large CRT would be a safer bet, though they're very hard to find new nowadays and very energy inefficient.
