Mugabe: "Vote for me -- or else!"

Mugabe warns of civil war if he loses the election

"I'm even prepared to join the fight," the 84-year-old Mugabe told a conference of his party's youth wing.

Mugabe said the veterans of the war of independence in 1980 had approached him after the first round of voting in March and threatened to take up arms again if opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai wins the June 27 runoff.

Tsvangirai finished first in a field of four in the first round but failed to win the majority needed to avoid a runoff.

"We can't allow the British to dominate us through their puppets," said Mugabe, returning to a campaign theme of portraying Tsvangirai as a pawn of Western powers, a charge the opposition denies. "A vote for the (opposition) is a vote for the British to have once again not just a foothold but real power."

Goddamn that son of a bitch.

Re: Mugabe: "Vote for me -- or else!"

Hell, Hitler never even threatened a German Civil War if he lost an election.

It sort of looks like his old buddies from the last century are on his case, though. Like they're not leaving him much of a choice.

Goddamn those sons-of-bitches and their dislike of the British.

Actually Hitler threatened to commit suicide if he lost the '32 election. O for the road not taken ...

Is that like threatening a mushroom cloud?

He has certainly given up on any pretense of democracy here. What a scum bag that man is, its hard to believe people like that even exist.

He committed suicide anyway.
I guess he was destined to either way.

Mugabe warns he will not cede power in Zimbabwe

"We shed a lot of blood for this country. We are not going to give up our country for a mere X" on a ballot. How can a ball point pen fight with a gun?" the Herald, a government mouthpiece, quoted Mugabe as saying.

Jesus Christ.

Of course that's what Mao used to do: threaten his party with civil war. It's how he stayed in power as long as he did. And how his country got as smurfed up as it did.

Re: Mugabe: "Vote for me -- or else!"

At this point, civil war and submission to a dictator are the only options.

Yep.

And if the people really wanted him gone they'd be willing to wage war to eject him. Certainly I see no reason why we should ever want to wage such a war on their behalf.

I could see a reason to support them if they initiated a revolt.

Sure, as long as it starts and ends as their fight.

And let's not forget the neighbours, who have been suckling off Mugabe's teat for years (i.e. Mbecki, who I feel sure will one day be found to have received cash payments in exchange for his support).

You're presuming they have any chance against him (instead of just a chance for being gunned down or having their home towns singled out to be starved to death).

This regime apparently has no problems with stealing US food aid -- at gunpoint -- that was intended for hungry children.  Who got the food?  The political supporters of Mr. Dictator, of course!  Mr. Dictator, who accuses others of playing politics with food, when he seems to be the primary (and maybe only) practitioner.

Oh, by the way, a Boston-area university decided to rescind the honorary degree they gave to Mugabe some years back.  Something about not wanting to have the University's good name associated with Mugabe's, any more.

And Mugabe's ZANU-PF was one of several poorly-funded, ill-equipped guerrilla groups that back in the 60s and 70s waged persistent war against the ruthless, high-tech military forces of the white minority government. And won. Despite frequent defeat and heavy losses.

And so it goes.

Latest update: Opposition candidate Tsvangiri drops out, cites "too many supporters being murdered".
Oh look - a UN Security Council resolution condemning Mugabe. How terribly useful.

I bet the opposition party wishes Zimbabwe was oil-rich so the rest of the world would actually support them.

I'll bet the opposition party wishes Zimbabwe's neighbours weren't so gung-ho about supporting Mugabe through thick and smurfing thin.

Zimbabwe's neighbors are probably thinking "what is with these opposition guys? Free and fair elections with binding results? That is NOT the African Way!"

Re: Mugabe: "Vote for me -- or else!"

"Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai is under no threat at all from Zimbabweans and he should cast away these delusions," Augustin Chihuri told a news conference in Harare.

I don't think it's "Zimbabweans" at large that Mr. Tsvangirai is worried about.  More likely, Mr. Tsvangirai has a well-grounded fear of Mr. Mugabe and his hangers-on.

Re: Mugabe: "Vote for me -- or else!"

Seriously, you guys need to read a real newspaper sometime.

The presidential run-off was an opportunity for all nationalists, progressive and democratic Zimbabweans to right the wrong of March 29 in their large numbers, the ruling party added.
