Vista on both Fusion and Boot Camp
Greetings,
I'm getting the impression that some people are running multiple installations of their Vista - one via Fusion, and another on Boot Camp. I'm assuming this is legal, since they are both on the same computer. However, I'm curious as to the correct way to get both installations authorized (registered?). I think some have mentioned a telephone call to MicroSoft.
If it's not legal, please correct me, and my next step will be to change my Vista from Fusion to Boot Camp.
Thank you
Dave

I would assume that it is legal, but I'm not sure. You should probably check the licensing agreement (yes the insanely long document that comes with most software...).

Re: Vista on both Fusion and Boot Camp
Well, I guess I answered my own question ... This afternoon I gathered up my courage and entered the registration information. The almost-immediate response was that my registration is complete. I'm assuming a search was done on my hard drive, and the information I typed in was in agreement with the original entries. So now I have legitimately-recorded registration info for both installations, in Fusion and Boot Camp.

Not quite. You have a given number of activations (5, I think) that you can use it before Microsoft asks you to call them to re-enable activation with that particular CD Key.

Re: Vista on both Fusion and Boot Camp
The EULA for some versions of Vista permits virtualisation. I believe Ultimate and Business are allowed, Home Basic and Home Premium not.
But as long as you are only running one virtualised copy at a time I don't see how it matters if the machine is real or virtual. A lawyer would probably be able to explain all the reasons why it is wrong, but it wouldn't make any sense.
Patience is a virtue of the weak for it makes them stand still long enough for the strong to crush them with ease.

OK, thanks - it's not a problem, since I will be running just one installation of Vista, on Boot Camp. With all of the trouble I had with Fusion, I'm perfectly happy to dump that installation if necessary to comply with the EULA.
Again, Booksley, thanks for your help! You have supplied some vital comments that helped me get things running, and I really appreciate it!

And thank you for your comments, as well. I don't believe there will be any problem complying with all of the legal requirements - if forced into dumping my Fusion installation, I will not complain. Right now my Boot Camp installation is running marvelously, and with only the minor irritation of occasionally having to reboot to go between Leopard and Vista, I'm a happy camper. I'm either going to use MacWrite or another (free) program to enable read/write access of the HFS+ drive from Vista - so far MacWrite works without a hitch.

What were the problems with Fusion, I haven't had any problems yet.
Oops, I just saw the audio post, any other problems.

Re: Vista on both Fusion and Boot Camp
Besides the distorted audio, the video would flicker as if something was interrupting whatever process was being used. Additionally, Fusion would not allow me to install different drivers for both audio and video. The VMware Tools directed the installation of the Creative audio driver, and a generic video driver which was woefully inadequate.
In contrast, with Boot Camp a much better audio driver (Realtek) was already installed, and I was able to download and install the correct driver for my graphics card (nVidia GeForce 8800 GT). With the file-sharing issue resolved via the use of MacDrive or macFUSE, etc., I elected to keep Boot Camp as my "Go-To" installation.

The reason for that is because your computer's hardware is not presented directly to the OS running in the VM. Fusion presents virtual hardware devices to the OS. You can't install drivers for hardware devices that don't exist in the VM.

Cool - thanks for the information! That finally helps me understand the problems I have been having. If someone on the VMware forum had helped with comments like this, I could have saved a lot of time in the last couple of weeks. Hopefully the next version of Fusion will resolve the difficulties I had. However, as it stands now I have a workable combination of hardware and software that I can use without distress, and I am a happy (Boot) Camper.
