me thinks i'm hosed
As I expressed in previous posts, I was messing around in the System folder and removed what was in the StartupIems folder. Now about 75% of the content of any given web-page is not displayed (missing captchas, interface buttons, some pics, etc.). Another thing I have noticed is that my external HD will not mount yet my thumb-drive does and my iPod won't appear in iTunes when it's plugged in. I guess I need to re-install Tiger?

Yar. Format and reinstall should always be the first thing you do with a used machine.

PowerBook G3: 4GB to 40GB
PowerMac G4 Cube: 10GB to 80GB
PowerMac G3: 10GB to 40GB
eMac G4: HD was DOA so new was needed
iMac G5: 200GB HD failed upon re-install
iBook G3: HD made constant ticking (as noted by seller) replaced upon arrival.
Replacement more out of desire for more space, all the old HD's have found their way into other welcome homes.

Ah, well, going for more space is an angle I didn't consider. Makes a lot more sense that way.

Considering I only have 36GBs of my 120GB hard drive. Space goes quick, especially with multiple user accounts.

Re: me thinks i'm hosed
I purchased a new Mac for my son to take to TAMU. He called to tell me he thinks he needs a new harddrive. I told him to bring it with him next time he came home, since he could use the computers in the computer lab until we got it repaired.
He is home and when he turns it on we get a screen with a picture of a folder and that is all we get.
I cannot find anything regarding this screen, I dont know where to start. If it is the harddrive, Is it a difficult job of replacement? Can I pickup a harddrive at one f the big box store or must I buy it through Apple only?
Help please

Re: me thinks i'm hosed
If it is a new Mac it should be under warranty and you should let Apple fix it.
Depending on the Mac it can have either ATA/IDE or SATA drives installed in it. Hard drives are universal, the only difference is the formatting for various systems.
iMac C2D, 2.0 GHz, OS X 10.6.2, 2.5 GB Ram.

Apple support is a good place to start looking...

I failed to mention that it was new when he started school. Warraty expired about three weeks prior to the problem. Sorry for the lack of detail. Thanks
