Yes, this is real. Our liberal media at work!
This is the cover of this week's issue of The New Yorker.
Now, obviously it's satire which they're using to mock people who hold such views but it's just completely wrong -- this is a national, widely read magazine which is going to sit out on new stand shelves for a week during election season and will be used by every wacho right wing organization in the country to further reinforce already stupid ideas some people hold.
I just don't know what to say.

I think they're making fun of people who might believe Obama's a terrorist rather then Obama himself. But that won't stop humorless, thick-headed people, not familiar with over-the-top satire from taking offense and actually believing it's true – It's a parody, not meant to be taken literally, damn-it.
Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

Irrelevant, because they'll show the cover on TV over and over and over, and the cover will circulate in emails, etc.
Evidently the 18 page article isn't great either though.

I'm not surprised. I think the New Yorker is very overrated.

It's The New Yorker.
Not surprising in the slightest.
Back in Junior High when we had fund raising contests to sell magazine subscriptions - my buddy and I figured out that pointing out The New Yorker as one of the mags made for a quick sale (this was in Albany, CA - where all the Berkeley Liberals who don't want to have to deal with those nasty smelly beggars in their yards but can't afford the Berkeley Hills live)

Maybe someone could issue a kind of reverse-fatwa against the cartoonist.
At 2 bucks an issue, The New Yorker is a pretty good buy, even for a Canadian subscriber. And to be able to read Updike on a regular basis makes it even better.
