TDS had a ball pointing out that the people in the news media pretending to be so upset over the cartoon were the same people who made such an effort to propagate the very myths that the cartoon illustrates.

I am actually surprised.
I subscribed to the New Yorker for years, this cover was pretty tone-deaf--something entirely unusual for a New Yorker cover, where even when they are controversial, they rarely step on their own toes.
I think the main problem with this cover was that it's sense of satire is poorly conveyed -It looks identical to some of the more cheezey far-right wing catroons and op-eds.
Sure, the New Yorker readership will see the cover as so over-the-top that the satire will be understood --but with the right-wing shreik machine pumping out lies about Obama being a "closet muslim", "terrorist fist jab", "taught in a madrassa", "hating the flag", "Michelle hating whitey", etc, the independant --or uncommitted voter has to filter through a ton of rediculous BS -perhaps ending up believing some of that crap. (like they bought the Swift Boat nonsense)
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.

On the Daily Show/Colbert Report this past Monday it was reported that a set of polls seem to show that the number of Americans who thought that Obama was Muslim was UP from 10% to 12% (and that those who thought he was Jewish was up from 0% to 1%).

I think Obama is Muslim in much the same way I'm Catholic. That is to say some family and upbringing in the faith but some family and upbringing in another faith and ultimately making ones own choice somewhere closer to the latter.
