iPhone in Australia Question???
OK I apologise if this is a stupid question or has been asked before.....
My wife is coming here to Texas for a vacation while I am here working and she wants an iPhone.
If I buy an iPhone at AT&T do I need to enter into the contract to be able to use the phone? If not will the phone be compatible for use on Australia's Optus GSM networks. She can just take the phone home with her and use her sim card from Australia for use.
We are looking at buying here as purchasing an outright phone in Australia costs upwards of $500.
Please let me know if this is a good idea or not......

English? Sorry, don't quite get what you're saying.
Best thing to do, buy the phone in the states, we're being ripped off out here atm.

Re: iPhone in Australia Question???
I tried switching SIM cards in my American bought first generation when I returned home to Japan and it didn't work. Now that SOFTBANK (my carrier) has started selling iPhones, I need to try again, but I'm not giving it much thought. With a 3G system, you may have better luck, but I wouldn't count on taking that American bought phone to Australia and using it right out. Never know, though, you may have better luck.
Cheers,

Re: iPhone in Australia Question???
You'll probably have to jailbreak the phone. Which currently isn't possible with the iPhone 3G.
You'd have to buy the phone in Australia

My turn for stupid question. How long of a vacation? A week or two? Can't it wait for her return to get a US phone.
I dunno about most folks but when I go on vacation I can't wait to cast off the smurf'n phone and leave it on the dresser.
AT&T keeps advertising the whole "More bars in more places" thing. I guess this would put it to the test. I'd go to AT&T here in the US and ask. ATM I don't think AT&T is selling iPhone w/o contracts yet. That step comes later and they too will be $500.
