I have a friend whose sister went AWOL from the Navy twice.  She did so because of sexual harassment that was not being dealt with by her superiors (and which actually got worse after she was required to return the first time).  Can't say that I can particularly blame her.

I'm not sure how her situation ended up but I know she's not in jail.

the military has some particularly crass knuckle-draggers, and some particularly spineless officers in these instances.

After the Somalia debacle the CF set up an ombudsman specifically to deal with systemic abuse where servicemembers would be putting a knife to their own throats if they went to their section commander or warrant. I can't say if it's a successful measure or not, but it's a way to get around the entrenched NCO fiefdoms that can develop through lack of quality leadership.

Perhaps Mr. Long should have asked for a transfer into the CF.
