Re: Economic crunch means some Americans go hungry

We should all reduce our intake to about 1800 calories a day. The human body has been adapted to short rations over many millennium. Which is one reason why on a modern "sufficient" diet certain peoples adapted to famine exisitance balloon up, which included most of the Amerinds of North, Central, and South Americas.

What government program does this story advocate?  Does it claim that they're going hungry?

mm indeed. Like the intellectual dishonesty of asserting that I said anything about the story making those claims

No but by implication from your thread title you did make that assertion.

Oh Boy! I love social engineering.

Some subjects actually enjoy pain, and withhold information they might otherwise have divulged in order to be punished.

Re: Economic crunch means some Americans go hungry

Highly processed starches and sugars are what's largely causing the obesity, together with overeating. this food is cheap, calorie dense, and not very satisfying in amounts that stay within ones limits in terms of calorie intake vs. output. One doesn't have to be a pig to become fat. Americans also need to learn a thing or two about nutrition.

One pound of fat = 3600 kCal.

Average basal metabolic rate, 1500 - 1900 kCal/day

Actual calorie rate/day = basal metabolic + activity + thermic effect of food

break even calories in = calories out.

Whatever your break even point, you eat 100 excess calories per day and in 36 days you gain a pound. 1 year and you gain about 11 pounds. 5 years you gain 55 pounds. . . do the math.

Some folks eat way more than 100 excess calories/day. some eat way more and burn it off exercising or at a job that is physically demanding. Some folks just eat too damned much and watch too much teevee.

Not entirely related, but kinda. I broke my ankle in the beginning of march. Totally off cycling for 2 months, very limited for 2 more months. In 4 months, I put on almost 30 lbs. And really, I didn't put on anything for about a month and a half.

Re: Economic crunch means some Americans go hungry

For the record, some Americans were going hungry even during the dotcom affluence.

It's just more noticable today; more can see themselves slipping there.
