Apple "product transition"

Once again, Apple "announces" a product transition.      Or not.    There's no hint of what it will be from nor to.   iPhones, iPods, MacBooks, iMacs, AppleTVs.

Basically, what we have is a useless announcement.  hmm

Re: Apple "product transition"

Ars has quite a bit. Flying cars, all kina things. Oh, and Steve's dying- the usual. smile

Guess Apple's gonna have to sell 9.3 million iPhones the other three quarters- each their most fantasticalest evar! big_smile .. er, while guiding expectations downwards. confused

Apple sold a mere 717,000 iPhones during the quarter due to the still-unexplained shortages. Apple expects to sell more iPhones this quarter "than ever before." The previous record high was 2,315,000 sold during the holiday quarter of 2007. The company is also "very confident" in achieving the goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008.

Hmm.

My guess: they're going to start a MVNO.

Ha.

Since they recently hired the former CTO of Segway, it will clearly be... the all-Apple iSegue! All-singing, all-dancing, all iTunes. You'll have an i old time! http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/music.gif

...it'll just cause Apple to make less money. hmm

Re: Apple "product transition"

But as for the article, if I had to guess, I'd say Apple was planning to revamp the Mac OS UI to something more contemporary.

If Apple explores completely new interaction models that would require a LOT of dev work and 3rd parties would have to completely redesign their applications. This would be a massive transition.

Re: Apple "product transition"

Hard to know quite where to put this, but it doesn't seem worth yet another iThread. It is biz news, tho.

Mass market adoption eludes 3G iPhone in Japan

The 3G iPhone may be headed towards failure in Japan according to communications sector senior analyst Inui Makio who works for financial services firm UBS. In an article on Japanese tech site ItMedia +D, Inui points out all of the reasons why the 3G iPhone may have lost momentum in Japan.

The 3G iPhone, which was projected to sell one million units in Japan, appears to have only sold 200,000 units at the most. Both Apple and Softbank continue to keep actual sales figures a closely guarded secret. Inui’s initial estimates put yearend sales figures at 350,000, but that figure appears unreachable at the current sales rate. Although it has only been a short period Softbank has already adjusted 3G iPhone pricing plans lower in an attempt to boost sales.

The lack of features found in most Japanese cell phones appear to be holding back the iPhone from succeeding in Japan. The 3G iPhone is not able to use pictograms in text messages and emails. [..]

10,000,000 in '08 without approaching target numbers in Japan?

Re: Apple "product transition"

Alternative to Nehalem/Core i7?

Intel is expected to announce the "Dunnington" processor later this month, the first six-core processor and last of its Penryn-class chips.

Intel on September 15 is expected to roll out the Intel Xeon 7400 series Dunnington processor targeted at the server market, the final member of the "Penryn" family of processors, according to sources at server vendors. Penryn will be followed by the Nehalem microarchitecture, due to appear initially as the Core i7 processor in the fourth quarter.

Alternately, Apple could wait for Nehalem-based chips. 2x6 is major overkill, but a possible marketing coup with concomitant bragging rights. Enough hereabouts will drool over the idea of next-gen 12-core CPUed MPs.

At least they'd be future-proof for # of cores.

I never understood how anyone would have ever expected the Segway to gain any traction.
Hard to sell a form of transportation that is illegal to use practically everywhere.

I'm sure cars were illegal in a lot of places once.

It's hard to sell a form of transportation that is four or five times as expensive and simultaneously less useful than a bicycle.

You should never buy stock ahead of an Apple announcement or Macworld.  The stock always immediately tanks because investors are pissed off that whatever Apple just announced doesn't come bundled with a free Second Coming of Christ.

But, you don't have one - that's Segway's problem.   People want them, sort of, but not badly enough to actually get one.

Or if you have a time machine, you should buy some Apple stock about 5 years ago.  Apple's one of the biggest companies in the US now - there's only so much they can grow.

Certain Brits seems rather keen on it (not to mention Woz).

LEMBIT OPIK, the Welsh MP most famous for doing one of the Cheeky Girls, has made an Emily Pankhurst-like protest in order to avail us all of the freedoms which our ancestors fought two world wars to secure.

The wonky-gobbed gingernut tore himself away from important work in his Montgomeryshire constituency long enough to pootle up and down outside Westminster on a Segway in a bid to force UK lawmakers into making the expensive toys legal to use on British roads.

Re: Apple "product transition"

Actually is a new iPod line from bottom up.

The Shuffles get new colors and a charge indicator.
The Nanos get a new design, new colors, larger capacity, genius, and an accelerometer.
The Classics get a 120 hard drive (up from the base unit, down from the high end model), genius and a single price point.
The Touches get larger high end capacity, lower low end price, and genius.
