Re: The Dark Knight [SPOILERS]
I liked the 2nd one a lot. I was really into the comics, however.

Honestly, it was a bit too dark for me. I was pretty surprised by how violent and thematically disturbing it was. There really weren't a lot of points of light in the whole flick. (guess I could have guessed that from the title) It was a well-made movie, but didn't deliver on a lot of the kinds of things I typically go to an action flick for. Stylistically I think it was more akin to Silence of the Lambs or Se7en than any comic-book-blockbuster that I've ever seen.
Too dark? A Batman movie? Too dark? Not possible.
The Dark Knight isn't the typical hero. He's not supposed to be optimistic like freakin' Superman. And he's not all sunshine and roses like Spiderman. He's the Dark Knight. No super powers, only super pissed off...and super rich. He's emotionally fallen, what do you expect from him? Kittens?
SOTL and Se7en? Yeah, I don't think so.
I think maybe you're more into Batman Forever with the black lights and neon suits.
This was needlessly antagonistic. I just said I thought it was pretty dark. I like the realism - I really liked Batman Begins. I just didn't go into it expecting to see people forced to kill each other off, or a pen shoved into a guy's eye socket, or a guy talking through his burned-off face. Seemed like every scene centered around violence, and for 2.5 hours there wasn't even the slightest hint of levity. Just my take.

not a pen, a pencil.
very important.
And, we're not even 100% sure that it went into his eye socket!

We'll get a frame by frame analysis when the DVD comes out, no doubt.
How did Harvey Dent's eye remain moist and usable when he had no lid or tear-duct?
Loved the movie, by the way.

Wait....are you saying that in fact the Joker didn't kill batmans parents after all?

The levity was Joker's presence. Twisted levity. Lovely twisted levity.
I thought it was refreshing to see something that didn't have stupid jokes in it like the Hellboy movies (I like them, but don't take them nearly as seriously as I do my Batman movies).
Needlessly antagonistic? Maybe, but I think you're hellbent on dismissing a great movie because it wasn't happy enough for you when that's not what a Batman movie is supposed to be about.
As far as the violence....I dunno how many times it needs to be said....it's a comic book movie. Comics are violent. Two-Face HAS a nasty burned up face. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Face The boat thing as well as the pencil trick were both used to show Joker's character. He's a messed up guy that does messed up stuff. Messed up stuff tends to be violent.
Batman=Dark
Dark≠Light
Batman≠Light
What exactly were you expecting from this movie?
Now, where's the stick poking Max?
Alright, now, who wants to be transistorized?
